Here's something we believe at The Village...

People rarely change because someone shamed them.

They change because someone understood them.

Addiction is rarely just about the substance.

It's often about pain.

Stress.

Trauma.

Loneliness.

Or trying to cope the best way someone knows how.

We're proud to have Sabrina Gendreau, RSSW, CCAC on our team, providing compassionate, evidence-informed counselling for substance use, addiction, and recovery.

Because everyone deserves to be met with compassion before judgment.

Why does my child fall apart over something so small?

Maybe...

It isn't small.

At least not to them.

As parents, we often look at our child's reaction and think...

"When I was their age, I would have just dealt with it."

Or...

"I've been through much worse than this."

And you're probably right.

But here's what we sometimes forget...

You aren't comparing your child to another child.

You're comparing them to you...
..after decades of experiencing disappointment.

After years of learning to cope.

After hundreds of difficult conversations.

After thousands of moments that slowly increased your capacity to tolerate uncomfortable emotions.

Your child hasn't had that practice yet.

They haven't built the emotional "muscle" that you have.

So when they melt down over losing a game...

Or panic about a school presentation...

Or cry because a friend didn't sit with them at lunch...

It may seem small to you.

But it might be one of the biggest emotional experiences they've had so far.

The goal isn't to expect them to respond like an adult.

The goal is to help them become one.

Not by making their feelings disappear...

But by staying with them while they learn they can survive them.

❤️ Children don't borrow our life experience.

They borrow our calm.

And over time...

They build their own.

🍎 One day they're holding your hand walking into kindergarten.

The next, they're walking into middle school pretending they don't need you.

Every school year brings new opportunities...
..and new worries.

Will I make friends?
Will my teacher like me?
Am I smart enough?
Will I fit in?

As parents, we often notice the backpacks, the lunch boxes, the new shoes, and the school supplies.

But sometimes the biggest things our children carry are the ones we can't see.

Anxiety.
Pressure.
Loneliness.
Big feelings.
Changing friendships.
Growing up.

This back-to-school season, let's remember that preparing our children isn't just about getting them ready for class.

It's about helping them feel safe, confident, and emotionally supported.

At The Village Wellness Services, we help children and teens navigate life's transitions while partnering with parents every step of the way. Because when a child feels supported at home, they carry that confidence into the classroom.

This school year, let's pack their backpacks...
..and their emotional toolbox. ❤️

Can I share something I've learned after working with couples?

Relationships rarely end because of one big fight.

They slowly become disconnected because of hundreds of conversations that never happened.

What makes The Village different?

One of the biggest misconceptions about child therapy is that the child is the only one who needs support.

At The Village Wellness Services, we see things differently.

Children don't grow in isolation—they grow in families.

That's why, whenever appropriate, we offer parallel care.

This means your child has their own therapist, while you, as the caregiver, have your own therapist too. Rather than expecting one clinician to carry the entire family's story, both therapists collaborate (with your consent) to support the family as a whole.

Because when a child is struggling...

Parents are often overwhelmed.
Caregivers can begin doubting themselves.
Siblings feel the impact.
Family dynamics shift.

Supporting only the child often means missing half the picture.

Our goal isn't simply to help children manage difficult emotions.

It's to strengthen the relationships around them.

We work from a family systems lens, helping parents understand what's happening beneath the behaviour, build confidence in responding to challenges, and create lasting change at home—not just in the therapy room.

Because when caregivers heal, learn, and feel supported...

Children benefit too.

💚 It really does take a village.

We've been receiving a lot of questions about postpartum support... this post is for you! 🤍

Yes, we offer postpartum care. And yes, we would be honoured to support you and your family during this exciting (and exhausting!) season of life.

Welcoming a new baby is one of life's greatest joys—but it can also be exhausting. While you're healing and soaking up every newborn cuddle, let us take care of the rest.

At The Village, our PSWs also support new parents by helping with everyday responsibilities while you recover from childbirth and adjust to life with your newborn.

Whether it's preparing meals, folding laundry, tidying the house, assisting with personal hygiene, or simply giving you space to rest...

We're here to care for you while you care for your baby.

Children often look at us a little funny when we suggest this.

"Let's give your worry a name."

Why?

Because anxiety can feel enormous when it's just a feeling. It's everywhere, all at once, and difficult for a child to understand or explain.

But when anxiety becomes "Samantha," "Mr. Worry," "The Bossy Brain," or even "Gary the Worry Monster," something changes.

Suddenly, the child isn't the anxious one.

They're a child who has a worry visiting them.

That little bit of distance is powerful.

It helps children notice when their worry shows up:
💭 "Oh... Samantha is telling me I can't do this."

It helps them challenge it:
💭 "I don't think Samantha is right this time."

And eventually, it helps them put the worry down instead of carrying it everywhere they go.

This is called externalizing—a therapeutic approach that helps children see that anxiety is something they experience, not who they are.

Sometimes healing doesn't start with making the worry disappear.

Sometimes it starts by giving it a name.

💚 At The Village Wellness Services, we help children understand their emotions in ways that feel safe, creative, and age-appropriate—because every child deserves the chance to feel bigger than their worries.

🌿 Why is The Village different?

We hope you meet your PSW long before you need one.

We believe care starts long before someone needs help getting dressed, preparing meals, or recovering from surgery.

We believe care starts with a relationship.

That's why we encourage families to meet their Personal Support Worker before a crisis happens.

Have coffee together.

Go for a walk.

Learn each other's stories.

Because when life changes, you're not opening your door to a stranger...

You're welcoming someone you already know and trust.

❤️ We intentionally stay small.

Why?

Because we want to know more than your care plan.

We want to know...

• What makes you laugh.

• How you like your morning coffee.

• The names of your grandchildren.

• Whether you prefer gardening or sitting on the porch.

• The little routines that make your day feel like your day.

You're never just a file.

You're never just a visit on a schedule.

You're a person with a story.

And we're honoured to become part of it.

Whether we're helping with personal care, preparing a meal, walking the dog, tending the garden, providing respite for a caregiver, or simply sitting beside you after a difficult day...

We're not just completing tasks.

We're building relationships.

Because that's what a village does.

How Do You Choose the Right Therapist? 🤔

One of the most common questions we hear is:

"How do I know which therapist is right for me?"

Many people start by looking at credentials—and that's important. Your therapist should be appropriately trained, licensed, and committed to ongoing professional development.

But here's what the research tells us:

A therapist's education alone isn't what predicts successful therapy.

Some of the biggest factors include:

✔️ The therapeutic relationship.
✔️ The therapist's ability to adapt.
✔️ Evidence-based treatment.
✔️ Your goals matter.
✔️ Fit matters.
It's okay if the first therapist you meet isn't the right fit. Therapy is a relationship, and finding someone you connect with can make all the difference.

💚 And here's something else that's important...

We don't expect you to show up as the "best version" of yourself.

Come exactly as you are:
-Swear if you need to.
-Cry if you need to.
-Celebrate your wins.
-Laugh.
-Sit in silence.
-Vent about your week.
-Bring the messy thoughts you've been afraid to say out loud.

Some days you'll leave feeling lighter.
Some days you'll leave with a lot to think about.

Both are part of the work.

At The Village Wellness Services, we offer free 15-minute consultations because finding the right therapist should never feel like a guessing game. We want you to feel comfortable asking questions and deciding whether we're the right fit for you.

Finding the right therapist isn't about finding the "best" therapist.
It's about finding the therapist who helps you feel safe enough to be your authentic self.

🌿 Because healing begins when you no longer have to pretend.
