🎓 Navigating Your Child’s Education: Rights, Advocacy & School Supports

Supporting your child at school can sometimes feel overwhelming—especially when you’re trying to understand accommodations, meetings, documentation, inclusion, and your child’s rights within the education system.

Join Dr. Michelle Schmidt, Executive Director of ACT – Autism Community Training, for a practical, neurodiversity-affirming online workshop designed to help parents and caregivers feel more informed and confident when navigating their child’s education.

During this 2-hour session, we’ll explore:
• Understanding your child’s rights within the education system
• Advocating for meaningful school supports and accommodations
• Preparing for and participating in school meetings
• Communication and documentation strategies
• Behavioural supports, accessibility, and inclusion
• Legal and human rights protections for students with disabilities
• Practical ways to work collaboratively with school teams

In collaboration with the University of British Columbia (UBC), ACT is pleased to offer an upcoming Indigenous Caregiver Circle for Indigenous parents, caregivers, and families of children with disabilities and other support needs.

This supportive session will explore how to navigate disability services and address common barriers families may encounter. Participants will also learn about practical tools and resources for supporting children at home and in the community, along with strategies for self-advocacy and accessing appropriate supports.

The Circles will provide opportunities to connect, share experiences, ask questions, and learn together in welcoming and culturally respectful environments.

🌏 Connecting Across Borders
ACT Executive Director Dr. Michelle Schmidt recently met with Team IEUM, a group of inclusive education students from Ewha Womans University in South Korea, during their research visit to British Columbia.

Their research explores inclusive education and transition supports for autistic youth and adults, including post-secondary education, employment, independent living, and community participation.

It was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences, and discuss how communities can better support autistic individuals and their families.

Autistic people are more likely than the general population to identify as gender diverse or transgender. There’s no single reason why, but many autistic people describe feeling less pressure to conform to social norms and a stronger need for identity to feel authentic and self-defined.

Gender expression can look different for everyone, through clothing, medical support, community, language, creativity, or self-exploration over time.

What matters most is support, safety, and the freedom to be yourself. Every identity is valid, and every journey deserves respect.
