Migraine is much more than a headache. It is a complex neurological condition that can significantly impact a person's work, relationships, daily activities, and overall quality of life.

At Alberta Neurologic Centre, our General Neurology team of Neurologists, Nurse Practitioners, General Practitioners and Registered Nurses are here to support patients at every stage of their journey. Our team is committed to clearly define the nature and cause of each patient's diagnosis, allowing us to develop a comprehensive management plan tailored to their individual needs, goals, and lifestyle.

We believe that understanding your condition is an important step toward managing it. That's why our team is committed to providing thorough assessments, compassionate care, and the education patients need to make informed decisions about their health.

Together, we are dedicated to providing excellence in neurologic care to Albertans and helping those living with migraine find the support and treatment options they need. 🧠💜

Yesterday, members of the ANC team, community migraine providers, industry supporters, and patients gathered to participate in the Calgary Move for Migraine Walk.

Each year, the event continues to grow, and this year we were thrilled to welcome participants who travelled from Edmonton to show their support. We would like to thank everyone who joined us, walked alongside our community, and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine.

We look forward to hosting the event again next year and hope to see even more of you there! ☀️👟🧠

Over the weekend, Physiotherapist Jacquie Townsend participated as a panelist at the Parkinson’s IQ + YOU event in Calgary. Hosted by Parkinson Canada, the event focused on helping individuals living with Parkinson’s disease build and navigate their healthcare team.

Jacquie was joined by specialists in movement disorder neurology and speech-language pathology. Her key message emphasized that exercise is medicine and that physiotherapy should be accessed as early as possible following a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

If you or someone you know is living with Parkinson’s disease and is not currently working with a physiotherapist, Jacquie is currently accepting new patients. Both self-referrals and referrals from family physicians are accepted.

To highlight Migraine Awareness Month, we want to share a common procedure routinely performed in our clinic to help patients manage headache and migraine pain: a nerve block.

A nerve block is a procedure in which a local anesthetic (sometimes combined with a steroid) is injected around specific nerves in the head or neck. This can help reduce migraine pain and calm irritated pain pathways.

Nerve blocks are a valuable treatment option for patients experiencing status migrainosus, for pregnant individuals who require migraine treatment, and as a bridge therapy for patients whose OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox®) effects have worn off before their next scheduled injection.

At ANC, we host four nerve block training sessions each year for community healthcare providers interested in incorporating this procedure into their practice. By sharing our expertise, we aim to expand access to care and improve treatment options for patients living with migraine and other headache disorders.
