đź’ś SEPTEMBER IS RECOVERY MONTH 2026 đź’ś

Recovery deserves to be celebrated.

This month, we honour every person who has chosen to keep going. Every person rebuilding their life, reconnecting with family, learning to love themselves again, and discovering who they are beyond addiction.

We celebrate the milestones — whether it’s 24 hours, 30 days, one year, or decades.

We celebrate the families, friends, counsellors, treatment programs, recovery communities, and loved ones who walk beside us.

And we remember those we have lost far too soon. 🕊️

Recovery is not always a straight line. It takes courage, connection, honesty, forgiveness and a whole lot of hope.

Most importantly, RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE.

This September, let’s talk about recovery out loud.
Let’s break the stigma.
Let’s share our stories.
Let’s remind someone who is struggling that they are never alone.

❤️ There is hope. There is help. There is life in recovery.

đź’› A story from an Alumnae

Recovery is possible.
There is hope, and you never have to walk this journey alone.

“I was so lost before I found recovery. I didn’t believe I was an alcoholic, but everyone around me knew I was. I knew I liked to drink and to do drugs, but I didn’t see how badly I was burning everything in my life down to the ground. Finally I hit rock bottom. I am so lucky because my support system, and God, never gave up on me. I found salvation as well as inner peace. I was drowning my grief and my trauma, when all I really needed was to have people listen to me, to be believed, to confront the core issues without using drugs and alcohol as a crutch. Going into an all women’s treatment facility was the best possible decision. I found true solidarity, life-long friendships, and finally knowing that I was not alone with what I was feeling inside. I needed that more than even I knew! Recovery has and always will be a hard process, but I continue everyday to strive for progress and not perfection.”

❤️‍🩹 UNDERSTANDING THE 3 STAGES OF RELAPSE

Relapse doesn’t always begin with picking up a drink or a substance.

Often, it begins long before that.

Understanding the stages of relapse can help us recognize the warning signs early and reach for support before we return to old behaviours.

🌱 1. EMOTIONAL RELAPSE

You may not be thinking about using, but emotionally, you’re beginning to struggle.

Warning signs can include:
• Isolating from others
• Bottling up emotions
• Skipping meetings or supports
• Neglecting sleep, nutrition or self-care
• Feeling angry, anxious, overwhelmed or exhausted
• Trying to handle everything alone

This is the time to slow down, reconnect and ask for support.

🧠 2. MENTAL RELAPSE

This is when the battle begins in your mind.

Part of you wants to protect your recovery, while another part starts remembering or romanticizing your old life.

Warning signs can include:
• Thinking about drinking or using
• Remembering the “good times” and forgetting the consequences
• Thinking about people or places connected to using
• Bargaining with yourself — “Maybe just once…”
• Looking for opportunities to use
• Planning how you could use without anyone knowing

This is the time to get honest and tell someone what’s happening.

❤️‍🩹 3. PHYSICAL RELAPSE

Physical relapse happens when you actually return to drinking or using.

But a slip does not mean you have to give up on recovery.

Reach out. Get honest. Accept support. Return to the tools that helped you before.

✨ REMEMBER: RELAPSE IS OFTEN A PROCESS, NOT A SINGLE MOMENT.

Disconnection → Emotional struggle → Thoughts of using → Planning → Using

The earlier we recognize the warning signs, the sooner we can interrupt the cycle.

Recovery isn’t just about not picking up.

It’s about learning to recognize when we’re struggling, speaking up when we need help, staying connected and continuing to choose ourselves.

You don’t have to wait until you’re falling apart to reach out. Connection can be part of relapse prevention. 🤍

The Gifts of Recovery ❤️
By Jade Lee

This weekend was one of those beautiful reminders of exactly why I chose recovery.

Having all three of my kids together for the weekend, enjoying our Calaway Park adventures, laughing, being silly, and simply making memories together — these are the moments I once dreamed about. 🥹❤️

Recovery has given me so much more than sobriety. It has given me presence. It has given me the chance to truly show up for my children, to experience their happiness, and to create memories that I’ll carry in my heart forever.

Today, my heart is so incredibly full of love and gratitude. ❤️

These moments are the real gifts of recovery — and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Making memories. Being present. Loving deeply. Living fully.

❤️

❤️ RECOVERY & MOTHERHOOD
Rebuilding trust, connection & presence—one day at a time.

Recovery as a parent is about so much more than putting down the substance. It’s about learning how to show up again—not perfectly, but consistently, honestly and with love.

For many parents, recovery can bring guilt and grief over moments we wish we could change. Those feelings are understandable, but our past does not have to determine how we show up for our children today.

🌿 Trust is rebuilt through consistency.
Keeping promises, creating stability and showing up—even in the little moments—can gradually help rebuild a child’s sense of safety.

🤍 Presence matters more than perfection.
Our children don’t need us to have everything figured out. They need our attention, affection, honesty and willingness to keep growing.

🌱 Healing can happen together.
Children may have their own feelings and experiences to work through. Giving them space to feel, ask questions and receive support is an important part of family healing.

✨ Recovery teaches powerful lessons.
When our children watch us ask for help, take accountability, move through difficult days and choose healthier lives, they witness resilience in action.

Parenthood doesn’t require perfection—and neither does recovery.

Keep showing up. Keep healing. Keep choosing recovery.

Because every healthy choice you make today can help build a different tomorrow. ❤️

Hi, I’m Krystal, a mother in recovery.

After becoming pregnant and struggling with substance use disorder, I realized it was time for me to quit. I was able to build 18 months of sobriety, but during my second pregnancy, while going through a separation, I relapsed. It was devastating.

I would go back out for almost two years, carrying a lot of guilt and shame about where I was as a mother and as a person who desperately wanted to better herself.

I was eventually given an opportunity to return to school as a mature student. My Social Service Work program became a turning point for me. Through my schooling, I was introduced to the rooms of recovery, and from there, my real recovery journey began.

Recovery has given me the opportunity to learn, heal, grow, and make peace with my past. I’ve learned that my mistakes do not have to define who I am or where my life is going.

Along my recovery journey, I also experienced the heartbreaking loss of my children’s father to addiction. That loss has shaped me deeply and strengthened my commitment to recovery and to supporting others who are walking this path.

Today, I hold diplomas in Social Service Work and Wellness Counselling, and I’m returning to school this September to complete my degree in Social Work. I’m grateful to be able to use my lived experience to help others and support people in their own recovery journeys.

Recovery gave me my life back. Today, I’m not only living in recovery—I’m learning, growing, healing, and helping others along the way.

We are so incredibly proud of each of you. Keep rising, keep believing, and keep choosing recovery—one day at a time. 🌷

✨ Kristina’s Recovery Story ✨

Today, we are incredibly honoured to celebrate Kristina and 11 months of sobriety. 🤍

“Today I’m incredibly grateful to be standing here celebrating 11 months sober.

When I look back at where I was and where I am today, I honestly can’t believe how far I’ve come. Recovery hasn’t always been easy. There have been hard days, difficult moments, and times when I had to choose to keep going even when it felt impossible.

But today, I get to wake up sober. I get to be present. I get to make memories with my kiddos and truly be there for them. And that means more to me than I could ever put into words.

I know I couldn’t have done this without Alcove and without all of the amazing people I’ve met along the way. The support, encouragement, honesty, and friendships I’ve found here have helped me more than you know.

To everyone who has walked beside me, believed in me, listened to me, encouraged me, or simply reminded me to keep going—thank you.

My kiddos are one of my biggest reasons to keep choosing recovery. I’m so happy I get to experience life with them with a clear mind and an open heart.

Eleven months ago, I was taking the first steps toward a different life. Today, I’m proud of the woman I’m becoming.

I’m not going to pretend I know exactly what the future holds. I just know that I want to keep showing up, one day at a time, and keep choosing sobriety.

Here’s to 11 months, to second chances, to my kiddos, to Alcove, and to every person who has been part of my journey.” 💛

Kristina, we are so incredibly proud of you. Watching you continue to choose yourself, your children, and your recovery is something truly special. Eleven months represents so much more than a number—it represents courage, perseverance, growth, healing, and countless choices to keep moving forward.

Thank you for sharing your story so openly. Every time someone chooses to recover out loud, they remind another woman that change is possible and that she does not have to walk this journey alone.

Congratulations on 11 months, Kristina. Keep rising—we’re honoured to be part of your journey. 🤍

❤️ Gotta Love Recovery — & the Community That Comes With It! ❤️

Sometimes recovery shows up in the most unexpected ways… even on the side of the road with a flat tire. 🛞

After grad today, a flat tire — and one very stubborn valve cap — left one of our Alcove women in a bit of a bind. With daycare pickup quickly approaching, she had to hop in an Uber and leave the car behind.

But she wasn’t left to handle it alone. ❤️

Shelby and a wonderful friend from the community stepped in, stayed behind, and made sure she was taken care of.

These are the moments that remind us what recovery is really about: connection, community, showing up for one another, and knowing you don’t have to do life alone anymore.

Recovery builds more than sober lives — it builds a village. 🫶

To the helping hands who came to the rescue today, thank you. ❤️

Gotta love recovery. Gotta love community. Gotta love the people who show up.

— with the Amazing Abi! ❤️

At Alcove, recovery is about more than healing — it’s about rediscovering who you are, what brings you joy, and how powerful your voice can be.

Through Groove N Ink, Abi brings creativity, music, art, and self-expression together in a safe and supportive space where women can connect, explore, laugh, create, and heal.

These classes remind us that recovery doesn’t always have to look like sitting in a circle or talking through the hard stuff. Sometimes healing looks like picking up a pen, finding your rhythm, creating something beautiful, and simply being present.

✨ Find your rhythm.
🎨 Express your truth.
❤️ Heal together.

We are so grateful to have the incredible Abi sharing her energy, creativity, and passion with the women of Alcove.
