Pre-race massage or post-race massage?
Both! But honestly, if I had to choose, I'd go with pre-race every time.
This might sound surprising and counterintuitive, but hear me out. In the weeks leading up to your event, you've put in the work. You've trained for months and peaked at longer distances, faster speeds, and more weekly kilometers. Your body did the work, and now it's taking that training and adapting.
Tapering is a whole beast of feeling pent up, bored, antsy, and questioning if you've done enough. (You have!)
A massage a few days before a race gets the blood flowing, the tissues relaxed, and reduces your stress levels. Helps with little aches and pains and improves range of motion.
I always aim to have a massage 3 or 4 days before a race, as a final way to let it all go and feel ready.
After the race...well, that's a whole other story. Same concepts apply, within a week post race... but that one might feel a bit less "relaxing."
