Bow Valley Palliative

Bow Valley Palliative We depend on our community volunteers and fundraising initiatives.

Providing palliative and grief supports within the Bow Valley and Improving the end of life experience for individuals and their families following a life-changing diagnosis. In the spring of 2014, a group was called together under the leadership of Lynn Cooper with the goal of establishing a hospice in the Bow Valley. The group continued to meet regularly and the vision expanded to include the de

velopment of a “compassionate community”, working alongside the current health and social services to support those with a life-limiting illness, and their families, throughout their journey. Under the group’s direction, the “Palliative Care Society of the Bow Valley” (PCSBV) was conceived. Development of a compassionate community soon grew to include the idea of constructing a palliative care house in Canmore for Bow Valley communities. The PCSBV is now a vibrant registered charity with a new Board of Directors charting that course for the future.

Richard has lived with HIV/AIDS for more than 40 years and is a cancer survivor. When ongoing symptoms, anxiety, and difficult treatment decisions became overwhelming, he was connected with a palliative care team.

What stands out in his story is that palliative care wasn't just about managing symptoms. It was about being heard, supported, and having a team that helped him navigate what mattered most to him.

His experience is a powerful reminder that palliative care can improve quality of life at any stage of a serious illness.

Watch Richard's story and learn more about how palliative care supports individuals and families beyond what many people expect.

Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, knowledge, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. June 21 also marks the summer solstice, a time that holds deep cultural significance for many Indigenous communities.

We believe compassionate care begins with listening, learning, and building meaningful relationships. As we continue our journey toward reconciliation, we are grateful for the opportunity to learn from Indigenous Peoples and to reflect on how we can help create spaces where everyone feels respected, welcomed, and cared for.

Today is a day to celebrate, learn, and deepen our understanding of the histories, cultures, resilience, and ongoing contributions of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

Some Father's Days are filled with celebration. Others are filled with memories.

Today, we're thinking of the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and father figures who have shaped our lives through their care, guidance, humour, and love.

And we're holding space for those who are missing someone special this Father's Day.

Wherever this day finds you, we hope you find a moment to reflect on the people and memories that remain close to your heart.

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬?

Behind every statistic is a person helping a spouse, parent, friend, or neighbour navigate illness, aging, or end-of-life care.

At Bow Valley Palliative, we see the dedication, exhaustion, and resilience of caregivers every day. These findings are a reminder that caregivers need more than appreciation—they need meaningful support, resources, and recognition.

Behind every step forward for the Pestell Centre for Compassionate Care are people who believe our community deserves compassionate care close to home. Donors, volunteers, partners, advocates, and neighbours have all played a role in helping bring this vision closer to reality.

This month marks an important step in that journey, and we are grateful to everyone who continues to walk alongside us.

Bow Valley Palliative is proud to be part of bringing these Memory Café gatherings to life — creating a welcoming space for people living with dementia and their caregivers to connect, share, and simply enjoy time together.

Each session includes a gentle activity and time to connect, followed by light refreshments — offering both meaningful engagement and a sense of community.

These events are made possible through strong local partnerships with the Town of Canmore, Town of Banff, FCSS, and Alberta Health Services, with support from the Connecting People and Community for Living Well group.

If you or someone you know could benefit, we warmly invite you to join.
