Grief affects the body in many physical ways because emotional pain can trigger stress responses. People may experience tiredness, headaches, muscle tension, chest discomfort, or changes in appetite. Grief can also disturb sleep, causing insomnia or excessive sleeping. Stress hormones may increase heart rate and blood pressure, leaving a person feeling restless or anxious. Some people experience stomach problems, such as nausea or digestive issues. Grief can also weaken the immune system temporarily, making it harder to fight illness. Over time, these physical symptoms may improve as the person adjusts to the loss and receives support from others.
