For over a decade, Lake of the Woods Brewing Company has embodied what it means to be an Inclusive Employer. They employ people of all abilities and backgrounds, actively create an environment of community and inclusion, while participating in a wide range of local and national initiatives. Three cheers for inclusion! ⭐

Ye Olde Chip Truck has been an institution in Kenora since the 70’s, arguably serving the best fries in the whole of North America. 🍟 And they are an Inclusive Employer! ⭐ Their company is dedicated to creating opportunities for employees to grow and hone new skills to help succeed in their future endeavors.

Thanks to both of these Inclusive Employers for their long-standing commitment to inclusivity in our community! 🏆

Wow! Thank you so much, Kenora, for helping us celebrate our first ever World Series community baseball game.

On Saturday, May 30th, we were able to welcome local celebrities, professional sports stars, individuals of all different abilities, the young, the old, and so much more to play on the same field together, and we were totally blown away with how everything played out.

A special thanks goes out to the Ogichidaa drums led by Steve Fisher, along with Jason Williamson, Terry Parisien and Freeman White, as well as Indigenous Elder Don Kelly and Jo-Hannah Atchison for helping us out with our opening ceremonies.

In the end, Team Community and Team Living ended up tying with a final score of 18-18, but more importantly, so many barriers were broken down and even more memories were made!

Everyone at KACL is incredibly grateful for everyone who participated, came to watch, or helped us out in one way or another. The game wouldn't have been possible without the assistance of Taggs Source for Sports, Kenora Safeway, the Ontario Provincial Police, Kenora GM/Honda/Dodge, and most importantly, our main collaborator, Triple PLAY Kenora.

This wonderful event concluded our celebrations for Community Living Month, which takes place across Ontario each and every May, but based on how the day went down, you can count on us doing it all again next year.

In the meantime, how did you enjoy the game? Do you have any great action shots to add into the mix? If so, please feel free to share them or your two cents with us below in the comments!

Our celebrations continued last week with KACL welcoming worldwide-turned-local musician Alex Call - the magic maestro behind the hit song 867-5309 - to the Community Arts Hub for a special night of concert, connection and community.

In addition to serenading the crowd, we were also able to take part in a special game of Community Jeopardy to better connect, communicate, and collaborate - three of our Community Living Month's 5 C's, with the other two being contribution and commitment!

Have you missed out on the action so far, but you'd like to get involved? Then we have good news for you! You have a chance to join us today, Wednesday, May 27th at the Jarnel Contracting Pavilion at 12 o'clock noon, when we will be kicking off a community walk to Husky the Muskie and back. Everyone who participates will get a free meal, so be sure to wear green and blue!

Last but not least, in partnership with Triple PLAY Kenora, Kenora's World Series event is looking like it's going to have perfect weather this Saturday, when it will also start at noon at the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre. In addition to a classic and celebrity ballgame, there will be free food, prizes, and fun and games for the whole family. Don't miss it!

KACL would like to acknowledge its support for the Moose Hide Campaign, which held its annual walk in Kenora last week alongside hundreds of others across the country.

The Moose Hide Campaign is an initiative meant to engage men and boys in leading conversations with the broader community about ending gender-based violence and violence towards children. Here in Kenora, the walk began at the monument to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people located at the Rotary Peace Park, before concluding at the Ne-Chee Friendship Centre.

Alongside fellow staff from the likes of Ne-Chee Friendship Centre, the Canadian Mental Health Association – Kenora Branch and Waasegiizhig Nanaandawe'iyewigamig (WNHAC), as well as students from Gaagagekiizhik Elementary and Bimose Community High School, KACL staff also attended to help raise awareness and ultimately stand in solidarity with this very important cause.
