Our third decade spotlight takes us to 2016–2026, a decade marked by the successful conclusion of the Why Campaign in 2018, raising more than $215 million to advance patient care, research, education and innovation across London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC).

Made possible by thousands of donors, the campaign helped accelerate breakthroughs in cancer care, neuroscience, cardiac care, mental health, women’s health, orthopaedics and personalized medicine. The impact of that generosity continues to be felt today.

Thanks to the philanthropic vision of the late Archie & Irene Verspeeten, a generous estate gift and several other generous donors, the Precision Oncology at Western University (POWER) study, conducted through the Verspeeten Clinical Genome Centre at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), is helping researchers explore new approaches to cancer care for patients across Southwestern Ontario.

As the first study of its kind in Canada, the study found that nearly one in three patients became eligible for new treatment options based on the unique genetic profile of their tumour. The findings highlight how precision medicine can uncover new possibilities for patients who may have limited treatment options.

Thanks to generous donor support, researchers can explore new approaches to cancer care and bring the promise of precision medicine closer to those who need it most.
