Pediatric OT is a lot more than handwriting. 👀💛

What makes occupational therapy unique is that we look at the whole child and the everyday activities they want and need to participate in.

Sometimes that means working on fine motor skills. Other times, it’s independence with dressing, feeling more comfortable at mealtimes, navigating sensory experiences, or building skills through play.

And often, these areas are more connected than they might seem.

That’s why OT isn’t just about what a child is finding difficult - it’s about understanding why and finding strategies that help them participate with greater confidence and independence.

Did any of these 5 surprise you? 👀

Sometimes the best OT tools are already sitting in your house. 👀

A simple roll of painter’s tape can create opportunities to work on everything from fine motor control and hand strength to balance, coordination, motor planning and pre-writing skills - all through play.

And that’s the important part: building skills doesn’t always need to feel like “practice.” When children are moving, exploring, problem-solving and having fun, they’re working on so many of the skills they use throughout their everyday lives.

So before you buy another activity… grab the painter’s tape and get creative! 🙌

Save this one for an easy activity to try at home.

Fall routines are filled with little opportunities to build independence. 🍁

Putting on a jacket, pulling up a zipper, changing shoes, packing a school bag, helping prepare a warm snack - these everyday moments are exactly the kinds of meaningful activities occupational therapy focuses on.

They help children practice fine motor skills, sequencing, planning, coordination, and independence without adding another “activity” to the day.

Because building skills doesn’t always require something extra. Sometimes it’s about giving children the opportunity to participate in what’s already happening around them. 💛

• • • • •

Now that our post-summer and fall routines are in full swing, school days are bringing plenty of writing, drawing, homework, and classroom activities. ✏️🍂

This is often when parents start noticing things like hand fatigue, difficulty keeping up with written work, or an uncomfortable pencil grasp.

A functional grasp allows for small, controlled finger movements that support precision, motor control, and endurance. And remember - there isn’t just one “perfect” way to hold a pencil! What matters most is that the grasp is functional, comfortable, and efficient for your child.

If writing continues to feel tiring, frustrating, or harder than expected, an OT can help look at the underlying skills and determine what support may be helpful. 💛

• • • • •

Fall is full of natural opportunities to practice pre-writing skills. 🍂✏️

Drawing pumpkins, tracing leaves, making lines in sand or playdough, and creating fall crafts can all help children explore the strokes and shapes that eventually become the foundation for handwriting.

Lines, circles, crosses, and other early shapes help develop fine motor control, coordination, and visual-motor skills - all through simple, seasonal play.

This fall, encourage your child to draw, trace, create, and explore. Those little marks are building important skills for what comes next! 💛

Sometimes the best place to support a child is right where their everyday life happens.

Providing occupational therapy directly in schools and daycares allows us to see how a child participates in their natural environment - from classroom activities and transitions to lunchtime, self-care, and play.

It also gives OTs the opportunity to collaborate with teachers, educators, and families to develop practical strategies that can be used throughout the child’s day.

Because the goal of OT isn’t simply building a skill - it’s helping children use those skills where they matter most. ✨

What exactly is the CO-OP Approach (Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance) - and why do we use it in occupational therapy?

In this video, Dr. Angie Mandich, Occupational Therapist and Professor Emeritus at Western University, explains how CO-OP helps children learn to problem-solve and discover strategies that work for them.

Rather than simply showing a child how to complete a task, CO-OP helps them think through what they want to do, make a plan, try it, and reflect on how it went - building skills that can carry over into everyday life.

A powerful approach for supporting confidence, independence, and meaningful participation. 💛

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is about much more than being “clumsy.”

DCD can make learning and performing motor skills more challenging, which can affect a child’s participation in everyday activities - from getting dressed and handwriting to riding a bike, playing sports, or keeping up with friends.

And when everyday activities consistently feel harder, it can impact confidence and willingness to participate, too.

Occupational therapy looks at the whole child. Rather than simply practicing a difficult task over and over, we help children discover strategies, develop skills, and find ways to participate more successfully in the activities that matter to them.

If you have concerns about your child’s motor development, send us a DM to learn more about how OT can help. 💛
