👂 Choosing a hearing aid? What factors should be considered? 🤔
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hearing aids are a vital tool for those with hearing loss, helping to amplify sounds and improve overall hearing ability. ✅ When choosing a hearing aid, there are several important features to consider to ensure that the device is the best fit for your needs. 📋
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🧑‍⚕️Your Audiologist: It is important to consult with a professional and highly-regarded audiologist who can help you understand your hearing loss, evaluate your needs, and recommend the best hearing aid for you.  It is a good idea to find an audiologist that is brand-neutral and independently owned, and that regularly uses best-practice methods such as real-ear measurements and speech in noise testing.  It also may be helpful to see the same audiologist for each of your hearing healthcare follow up appointments.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👂Type of hearing loss: Different types of hearing loss require different types of hearing aids. It is important to consider the level of amplification needed and to choose a device that can provide the necessary level.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🎧Noise Reduction Technology: Some hearing aid types come with multiple microphones which can help determine where sound is coming from and focus on sounds coming from a specific direction, like a person speaking to you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📲Connectivity: Many hearing aids now come with Bluetooth connectivity which allows you to connect your hearing aid to your phone or other devices.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔋Battery and Battery Life: Some hearing aids are rechargeable, and some use disposable batteries. Consider how long the battery life is for the device.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💰Price: Hearing aids can be expensive, so it is important to consider the cost of the device when making your decision. Keep in mind that the most expensive hearing aids are not be the best option for everyone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ultimately, the most important feature of a hearing aid is that it improves your ability to hear and makes your life easier. 👂

Hearing loss and diabetes are two health conditions that, while seemingly unrelated, have been found to be connected in several studies. People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing hearing loss than those without the disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of the main reasons for this connection is that diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the ear, which can lead to hearing loss. High blood sugar levels can damage the small blood vessels in the inner ear, leading to a loss of blood flow to the hair cells that are responsible for converting sound waves into electrical signals. This can cause permanent damage to the hair cells and lead to hearing loss.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Another reason for the connection between diabetes and hearing loss is that diabetes can cause nerve damage, which can affect the nerves in the ear that are responsible for transmitting sound signals to the brain. This can result in hearing loss, as well as tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Additionally, people with diabetes are more likely to have high blood pressure, which can also contribute to hearing loss. High blood pressure can damage the small blood vessels in the ear, leading to decreased blood flow and hearing loss.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To prevent hearing loss associated with diabetes, it is essential to manage blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Regular checkups with a healthcare professional, as well as regular screenings for hearing loss, can also help identify and address any hearing issues early on.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's important to note that there are other factors that can contribute to hearing loss, such as age, exposure to loud noises, and certain medications. However, the link between diabetes and hearing loss highlights the importance of managing diabetes and its associated risk factors to prevent hearing loss.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In conclusion, diabetes and hearing loss are connected in multiple ways, mostly due to the blood vessels and nerves damage that diabetes can cause. It is important for people with diabetes to take steps to manage their condition and to monitor for signs of hearing loss, in order to prevent permanent damage.

What is a CROS hearing aid? 🤷‍♂️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Imagine sitting at a table with one of your friends to the left of you, and your other friend to the right of you. Now imagine that your left ear doesn’t pick up any sound. 👂 It would be really tricky hearing your friend that is sitting to the left of you.👂
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s a solution for people that have this kind of hearing difficulty! 👍
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A CROS hearing aid is a very special kind of hearing aid used when someone has very, very low hearing in one ear, but normal hearing in their other ear. A special CROS hearing aid is worn on the ear with low hearing, and a normal hearing aid is worn on the ear with normal hearing. Sound from the low hearing side gets transferred (or CROSsed) over to the other normal hearing ear! Patient’s with a CROS hearing aid can now have increased access to sound from all directions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For a CROS hearing aid to be prescribe, the hearing ability of one ear must be so low that a normal hearing aid won’t work properly for it. 👍👂

What does hearing loss “look” like? 👀🤷‍♂️Some people may assume that hearing loss can be compared to ‘blurry vision’. In reality, hearing loss is quite different! In the example picture above, some of the words are quite easy to read, whereas other words are a lot more difficult to read. This is a more accurate representation of what hearing loss ‘looks’ like. ✅ Thoughts? Write them in the comment section below!
