Can we say it a little louder 📣📣📣✨

This New York Times article is such a great summary of what we at NYGHOBGYN have been telling our patients for years. There are ways that we can reduce our cancer risk that are widely known but not frequently adopted.

Getting the HPV vaccine and quitting smoking can dramatically reduce your risk of cervix cancer.

Opportunistic salpingectomy (fallopian tube removal) can dramatically reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. At NYGHOBGYN you can have this done during your scheduled or unscheduled cesarean section, or any other gynecologic procedure (if you do not require your fallopian tubes for fertility reasons).

THE BEST NEWS OF ALL is that you can now request this procedure during other abdominal surgeries at NYGH. We are super excited to partner with our surgical colleagues in this initiative moving forward. It is with deep sadness that our OBGYN department shares with the UofT family the passing of one of our esteemed former colleagues, a friend and highly respected clinician, Dr. Man Fan Ho, on Friday, June 12, 2026.

Dr. Ho passed away at his work home of 35 years, NYG, just a few floors above where he provided around-the-clock care to his patients for so many years. The same floor where there is a labour room dedicated in his name by a grateful family—one of many who trusted him implicitly. Many remember his quiet, calm, professional manner; surgeons remember his meticulous and efficient work; and all remember his big smile. He could be stubborn, but he was invariably right, and every decision he made was in the best interests of his patients, his department, and his hospital.

Dr. Ho served as Interim Chief of OBGYN and was heavily involved from the beginning in prenatal genetics performing amniocenteses, and spearheaded a robust surgical site wound infection surveillance program that continues to this day. His work with the NYG Foundation led to many generous donations.

Active to the end, he and his wife, Desiree, had just returned from a European holiday. He enjoyed golf and tennis at the Donalda Club. He would lecture us on sensible diets, keeping fit, and the value of travelling.

We send our love to Desiree and family, who shared him with us for so many years and were a part of our close-knit family here at NYG.

In lieu of flowers, a donation link has been created in honour of Dr. Man Fan Ho to support NYGH. Even in his passing, Man Fan continues to give back to the hospital he cared for so deeply.

A very happy last day of residency to Dr Essalah who finished as Chief Resident at NYGH. Ala you really shone in your surgical skills, patient care and hard work . Please join us in congratulating our wonderful colleague, Robyn Mercer, this year’s winner of the Anne McMahon Obstetrics & Gynecology Nurse Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching Medical Trainees Award for 2025-2026.

The Anne McMahon Award is given annually in memory of Anne McMahon who was a beloved and dedicated L&D nurse who demonstrated qualities of approachability, patience, and active involvement in teaching. The recipient is selected based on learner feedback from both medical students and residents. Robyn exemplifies these qualities as a generous teacher who always leads with kindness.

We are delighted to recognize Robyn for this very well-deserved honour. Robyn is an amazing teacher and has contributed to the teaching and learning environment for our students for over 2 decades.

Congratulations to our residents in the graduating class of 2026 at U of T Ob/Gyn. We are so proud of what you have achieved over these many years. What a night meeting your proud families and recognizing your amazing work.

NYGH represented at graduation and we had a wonderful time meeting up with colleagues and seeing our friends from around the city. Congratulations to all of the graduates and award winners!!
