Choosing a therapists is about good fit and also credentials, background and training - especially if a third party is going to reimburse for the cost (insurance for example). Clients need to navigate a lot of information to make a decision. This blog post is intended to summarize the regulatory environment in Ontario to help people make an informed choice.

I'm happy to share CRPO's new Social Media Guideline which specifically highlights antisemitism. A number of Jewish RPs brought this issue to the attention of the CRPO for the past three years and it is really good to see that they were heard and validated. (Which is unfortunately so rare in mental health circles as APA is facing issues for example.) If you see any social media posts that represent antisemitism or other forms of hate promotion by members please report.

Here's the paragraph and attached it the entire guideline:

INCITEMENT AND PROMOTION OF HATRED

While the term "hate speech" itself does not appear in the Criminal Code of Canada, publicly advocating genocide, incitement of hatred, wilful promotion of hatred and willful promotion of antisemitism are all criminal offenses. Advocating genocide is defined as advocating for or with the intent to destroy any identifiable group, namely killing members of the group or imposing conditions upon the group to bring about its physical destruction. Public incitement of hatred refers to "communicating statements in any public place, [which] incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace," while wilful promotion of hatred is characterized by "communicating statements, other than in private conversation, [which] wilfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group" (Criminal Code, RSC 1985, c C-46, s. 319). Wilful promotion of antisemitism is defined as "communicating statements, other than in private conversation, [which| wilfully promotes antisemitism by condoning, denying or downplaying the Holocaust" (Criminal Code, RSC 1985, c C-46, s. 319). Social media is not directly addressed in the Criminal Code. However, the phrasing of "communicating statements"is inclusive of social media or otherwise published statements.

Homesickness can be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t mean camp was the wrong choice, or that a child isn’t ready. For many kids, learning they can work through challenges, adapt to new environments, and spend time away from home helps build confidence and independence that lasts long after summer ends.

This week is Loneliness Awareness Week, and this framing from the Canadian Mental Health Association is exactly where we want to start.

Loneliness is a public health issue, not a personal weakness. The conditions for connection are not things any one person can manufacture alone. They are built by the communities, workplaces, and environments around us.

In Canada, 13 percent of people aged 15 and older report feeling lonely "always" or "often." That is not a collection of individual shortcomings. That is a pattern that points to conditions, not character.

This week, CPPA is sharing what the science says, what actually helps, and what it means to build environments where genuine connection is possible. We are glad you are here.

We recently said goodbye to one of our long term associates Maria Ahmed, RP, who has launched her own clinic related to addictions. Our clinic is not "competitive". We ethically promote client wellbeing by emphasizing the importance of therapist-client fit. It is not easy to stay afloat in an evolving tech-savvy marketplace where large clinics get bigger and smaller ones disappear at the 100th page of google. Still, we take pride in supporting and promoting others who offer services similar or different from our own and in turn build supportive networks. Our clinic has an addictions trained therapist, Ella who continues to offer appointments downtown and online AND we enthusiastically support Maria in her endeavors. Here is her new website:

Psychotherapy, counselling, and medical services in Cambridge, Ontario, rooted in holistic, trauma-informed care.
