Acute Injuries: What They Are & What To Do in the First 5 Days

An acute injury happens suddenly — often from a fall, twist, impact, or overstretch. Common examples include sprains, strains, muscle pulls, joint injuries, and sudden back or shoulder pain. These injuries can cause swelling, bruising, sharp pain, or difficulty moving the affected area.

The first 5 days are important for healing. Here’s what you can do to protect the injured area and reduce symptoms:

• Rest the area
Avoid movements or activities that increase pain. Giving the injury time to settle helps prevent further damage.

• Ice (if appropriate)
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time during the first 48 hours to help reduce swelling.

• Compression
A light wrap or bandage can help control swelling and provide support.

• Elevation
Raising the injured area above heart level can help reduce swelling and discomfort.

• Avoid heat, massage, and heavy stretching early on
These can increase swelling in the first few days.

• Watch for red flags
Severe swelling, inability to bear weight, numbness, or worsening pain should be checked by a healthcare professional.

At North York Physiotherapy Clinic, our physiotherapists can assess your injury, explain what’s been affected, and create a personalized plan to help you heal safely and regain strength. Early guidance can make a big difference in your recovery.

🎒 Back-to-School Backpack Guide
Physiotherapist Tips from North York Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic

A properly fitted backpack helps protect your child’s neck, shoulders, and back throughout the school year. Follow these simple tips to promote comfort, balance, and healthy posture.

Choose the Right Backpack
- Select a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps.
- Look for a supportive design that sits comfortably against the back.
- Choose one with multiple compartments to distribute weight evenly.
- Make sure the backpack size matches your child’s torso—it shouldn’t be wider or longer than their back.

Pack It Properly
- Place the heaviest items closest to your child’s back.
- Pack only what’s needed for the day.
- Use compartments to keep contents balanced.
- Aim to keep the backpack at about 10–15% of your child’s body weight.

Wear It Correctly
- Encourage your child to use both shoulder straps.
- Adjust straps so the backpack sits snugly against the back.
- Avoid letting it hang too low.
- The bottom should rest around the lower back or hip level.

Watch for Warning Signs
If your child experiences neck, shoulder, or back pain, numbness, tingling, headaches, rounded shoulders, or posture changes, the backpack may be too heavy or poorly fitted.

Help Your Child Start the School Year Comfortably
A backpack should support—not strain—their body. This season, choose proper fit, balanced packing, and comfort over fashion.

🤸‍♂️ 5 Signs You May Need Physiotherapy:

Pain or stiffness shouldn’t be part of your everyday life. Here are five signs it’s time to see a physiotherapist:

1️⃣ Persistent Pain — If discomfort lasts more than a few days or keeps returning, your body may need guided recovery.
2️⃣ Limited Mobility — Trouble bending, reaching, or walking could mean joint or muscle imbalance.
3️⃣ Post‑Injury Recovery — After a sprain, strain, or surgery, physiotherapy helps rebuild strength safely.
4️⃣ Poor Posture or Work Strain — Desk jobs and repetitive tasks can cause neck, shoulder, or back pain.
5️⃣ Recurring Sports Injuries — Proper rehab and movement correction prevent future setbacks.

💙 At North York Physiotherapy Clinic, our team helps you move better, recover faster, and feel stronger every day.

🏃‍♂️ Just Got Hurt? Here's What Matters Most in the First 48 Hours

Injuries can strike anytime—on the field, at the gym, on the job, or from an everyday slip or fall. What you do in the first 48 hours can shape how quickly and fully you recover.

❌ What NOT to Do:

Don't ignore ongoing pain or swelling.

Don't push through the pain or rush back to activity too soon.

Don't massage a fresh injury if there's significant swelling or bruising.

Don't rely on painkillers alone without addressing the underlying cause.

✅ What You Should Do:

Rest the injured area and steer clear of movements that aggravate it.

Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours, if appropriate.

Use gentle compression and elevation to help control swelling.

Get a professional assessment if pain, swelling, weakness, or limited movement doesn't improve.

🦴 Shoulder Pain? It Could Be Your Rotator Cuff — Here's What You Need to Know

Your rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis) that surround and stabilize your shoulder joint — making every lift, reach, and rotation possible.

When these muscles are damaged, even simple daily tasks like reaching for a shelf or sleeping comfortably can become painful.

⚠️ Common Signs of a Rotator Cuff Injury:

Dull, aching shoulder pain — especially at night

Weakness when lifting or rotating your arm

Reduced range of motion or stiffness

Clicking, catching, or popping sensations in the shoulder

🛡️ How to Prevent Rotator Cuff Injuries:

Always warm up before sports, lifting, or training

Strengthen your shoulder and upper-back muscles regularly

Avoid prolonged repetitive overhead movements without breaks

Maintain good posture — especially at your desk or workstation

Use proper lifting technique — keep shoulders neutral, use your legs

💪 How We Help at North York Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic:

Our experienced team provides a personalized, evidence-based approach to rotator cuff recovery:

✅ Comprehensive shoulder assessment to identify the root cause
✅ Hands-on physiotherapy and manual therapy to reduce pain
✅ Targeted strengthening and rehabilitation exercises
✅ Education on posture, movement, and injury prevention
✅ Guided return-to-sport or return-to-work programs

Whether you have mild tendinopathy or a significant tear, most rotator cuff injuries respond very well to physiotherapy — without surgery.

Had a Head Injury? Don't Ignore It — Concussion Rehab Can Make All the Difference.

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that affects how your brain functions — and it's more common than most people think. Whether from a sports collision, a fall, or a car accident, concussions deserve proper care and guided rehabilitation.

Common symptoms include:
🔸 Headaches & migraines
🔸 Dizziness & balance problems
🔸 Brain fog & difficulty concentrating
🔸 Sensitivity to light & noise
🔸 Fatigue, irritability & sleep disruption
🔸 Nausea & blurred vision

⚠️ Symptoms can last weeks or even months if not properly treated. In fact, 20–50% of people continue to experience symptoms for 3 to 9 months without the right support.

How we can help at North York Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic:

Our concussion rehabilitation specialists provide a safe, evidence-based, step-by-step recovery program tailored to you:

✅ Comprehensive concussion assessment
✅ Vestibular & balance retraining
✅ Vision & oculomotor rehabilitation
✅ Cervical (neck) therapy & manual treatment
✅ Graded return-to-activity & return-to-sport programs
✅ Cognitive fatigue management strategies
✅ Personalized exercise progression

🏃 Athletes, students, and working professionals — we help you get safely back to the field, the classroom, and the office.

💡 The key to full recovery? Don't rush it — and don't go it alone. Early, guided rehab leads to better outcomes and prevents long-term post-concussion syndrome.
