One of the most common reasons people with iron deficiency come to see me is because they’ve tried supplement after supplement, but their ferritin still isn’t improving.

And while replacing iron is an important part of treatment, it’s also important to understand why your iron became low in the first place.

Over the next few posts, I’ll be sharing more about how we investigate iron deficiency, including the labs that can provide more insight and strategies that may help optimize treatment.

So many people never find relief from period pain because they don’t understand what’s contributing to it.

Not all period pain is the same, but many of the same physiological mechanisms can contribute to pain, whether it’s primary dysmenorrhea or pain associated with conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis, or fibroids. Understanding those mechanisms can help you make sense of your symptoms and the different treatment options available.

If you’re tired of letting period pain control your life, let’s chat. Book a free 15-minute discovery call through the link in my bio.🤍

Will I ever shut up about fiber? Probably not.

These are some of my top hacks for increasing your intake and diversity 🫘🫛 because you probably still aren’t getting as much as you think you are 🤭

Since you got your period, it means you ovulated, right? Not necessarily.

Ovulation is what divides your menstrual cycle between the follicular and luteal phase, and also triggers progesterone production. Without ovulation, estrogen can continue stimulating the uterine lining, which may eventually shed even though ovulation never occurred.

This is also why long or irregular cycles are often related to delays in ovulation. In many cases, the issue isn’t that the second half of the cycle is too long, it’s that ovulation is occurring later than expected or not consistently.

Understanding ovulation often gives us a better picture of what’s happening physiologically and where treatment should be focused.

Birth control didn’t “damage” your hormones.

In many cases what we’re seeing is the normal process of the brain and ovaries re-establishing communication after ovulation has been suppressed (most common in OCPs compared to other forms like IUDs).

It’s also important to remember that hormonal birth control can sometimes mask underlying cycle issues that were present before it was started, which become again noticeable once it’s discontinued.

This is one reason I focus heavily on assessing ovulation in post-pill patients. Understanding whether ovulation is occurring consistently often provides valuable clues about how the HPO axis is functioning and what support may be most appropriate.

Not every histamine symptom = MCAS.

Social media has made histamine related conditions more visible, which can be helpful. But it has also further blurred the lines between two different diagnoses.

When symptoms overlap, it’s easy to focus on treatment before understanding the underlying cause.

The right intervention depends on the right diagnosis.

That’s why assessment always comes before jumping to a trending treatment.

The research is getting pretty clear that fertility outcomes don’t start at conception.

Current evidence points to metabolic health, nutrient status, lifestyle, and paternal health as major contributing factors long before pregnancy becomes the goal.

That’s why we look at your risk factors and overall health, so we can support the best possible foundation for pregnancy🤍

Preparing for pregnancy isn’t just about taking a prenatal vitamin.

A preconception assessment can help identify factors that may impact fertility, implantation, or pregnancy outcomes including ovulatory function, thyroid health, metabolic and insulin regulation, autoimmune conditions, and nutritional status.

The most appropriate testing depends on your individual history and symptoms, but addressing concerns before conception provides an opportunity to optimize health for both mom and baby.

Unfortunately the unsexy habits are often the most effective for bowel movements. It’s easy to focus only on “what to take” and skip the basics that actually matter.
