Dr Rodger Shortt is a specialist plastic surgeon who graduated from Queen’s Medical School in 2004 and became certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2009. He received further sub-specialty fellowship training with international plastic surgeons in micro-vascular breast reconstruction, cosmetic plastic surgery, and body contouring after bariatric (gastric banding) su

rgery, significant weight loss or post-pregnancy. In Canada, Dr Shortt received fellowship training with Dr Edward Buchel, from Winnipeg Manitoba, a world renowned micro-vascular breast surgeon. In Melbourne Australia, Dr Shortt trained with Mr Howard Webster an expert in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery and the recent past president of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Mr Richard Bloom a specialist body contouring and reconstructive plastic surgeon, and Dr Bryan Mendelson an international facial surgeon. Dr Shortt is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor and the Director of the cosmetic surgery training program for the plastic surgery residents of McMaster University. In addition, he shares his plastic surgery expertise by teaching other doctors Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Musculoskeletal Limb Support. Dr Rodger Shortt has received considerable recognition in his academic career. At Queen’s Medical School, he was the recipient of the Rattray Scholarship in Ophthalmology, the Bracken Award for Academic Achievement, and the Queen’s University Surgery Award. During his plastic surgery residency at McMaster University, he was a recipient of the Best Clinical Research Paper. Dr Shortt has been actively involved in plastic surgery research, has been invited to present his research at national and international conferences, and has published articles in key medical journals. Committed to providing his community with high quality patient care, Dr Shortt has hospital privileges at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Georgetown Hospital, in addition to Burlington, Mississauga, Milton and Hamilton. Is Breast Fat Transfer a One-Time Procedure?

“For most patients who have Breast Fat Transfer, they just do it one time.
I’d say probably 30% of patients do it a second time. Some people plan to do it right from the beginning. They knew that breast fat transfer has limits to how full they can go and they plan to
do it right from the beginning.

Others are actually so pleased with what they did get, they just want to do it again because they were pleased with what they have and they want more of the same.

So there’s a bit of a spectrum of what people choose to do for breast fat transfer.”

What are the Goals of Breast Fat Transfer?

“So the process of Fat Transfer, essentially if you have an area of fat which you would like liposuction or contoured, then it’s win-win. Some people don’t have extra fat, so we’re trying to find fat in areas that are a little bit thinner. But the goal is to make those areas look better than they currently do.

I think when people are looking for a really natural-looking breast
augmentation, you can’t go wrong with Breast Fat Transfer. I think that the volume you get may not
be enough to satisfy everybody, so I don’t recommend fat transfer to everybody. You can certainly have a very natural looking breast augmentation with an implant, but it’s important to choose the right implant to match the coverage that you have, the skin and the breast tissue that you’re putting it under in order to get a natural looking result.”

What is recovery like after Breast Surgery?

“You will feel sore for a couple of days, so I usually tell patients the first two or three days, you’re just moving slow. You’re up, you’re around your house, you can be out walking, but you’re moving slow.

Probably by a week, most people are starting to feel pretty good at that point,
but I wouldn’t want them going out and doing vigorous activity or exercise. By two weeks, people could be doing things like air squats or lunges, but still not going to the gym, not running.

By a month, you can pretty much do all those things. There’d be certain activities that people might do that we’d chat about, but really by a month, people are back to doing normal things.”

TREATMENT PLAN:

Can You Combine Liposuction with a Tummy Tuck?

“Oftentimes people come to see me wanting liposuction. And liposuction is great for somebody who has
a little bit of fullness in an area that we’re trying to shape or contour, but it’s certainly not going to address lax skin. It’s certainly not used as a weight loss device.

I think when people have laxity to the skin, a tummy tuck is going to make a way more significant benefit for them. Often I’ll use liposuction as an adjunct. So I’ll contour the flanks and give them increased hourglass shape or some concavity, you know, just to create shape for them. But I’m doing most of it through tummy tuck and I’m using the liposuction as an adjunct.

Some people do very aggressive liposuction. It’s just not something I’m as comfortable with. I’d rather people just do them separate if that’s the situation.”
