🎒🌻TRANSITIONING INTO A NEW SCHOOL YEAR
A new school year can mean new teachers, new classrooms, new routines, new expectations and a lot of change.
For neurodivergent students, transitions can sometimes feel especially overwhelming.
Here are a few ways to make the transition smoother:
✨Prepare ahead of time
If possible, visit the school, walk through the building, locate classrooms, and familiarize yourself with the new environment.
✨ Talk about what to expect
Discuss changes in teachers, schedules, routines, and expectations before school begins. Knowing what’s coming can help reduce uncertainty.
✨ Re-establish routines gradually
Start getting back into school-year sleep, morning, and homework routines before the first day.
✨Use visual supports
Calendars, checklists, schedules, and reminders can help make an unfamiliar routine feel more predictable.
✨ Allow time to adjust
The first few days — or even weeks — may be tiring. Give yourself or your teen time to settle into the new routine.
✨Make space for big feelings💛
Excitement, anxiety, frustration, and overwhelm can all be part of a transition. Listen without judgment and offer reassurance.
✨ Remember that support is a strength
Needing accommodations, extra preparation, or someone to help navigate change doesn't mean you're incapable. It means you've identified what helps you thrive.
🌻Every transition looks different. There is no “right” way to adjust.
Be patient. Be flexible. Celebrate the small wins.
