Today is an opportunity to celebrate Canada, its natural beauty, its people, and the values we continue to build together. It is also a moment to reflect.

We recognize that Canada's story didn't begin in 1867. This land has been home to Indigenous Peoples for thousands of years, and their histories, cultures, and contributions continue to shape the country we call home. Acknowledging this is an important part of moving forward with respect, understanding, and accountability.

On June 21st we observed National Indigenous Peoples Day.

At Amica Somerset House in B.C., our residents and Team Members honoured the land they reside on - we grateful for the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples.

Our LEC Julie Busch invited her mom and niece to demonstrate how to make bannock and share this tradition with our residents.  Following the bannock demonstration, Somerset House enjoyed a delicious lunch featuring salmon, Three Sisters salad, and bannock with berry compote for dessert.

We were also honoured to welcome Peter McKay and his partner, Mary, who shared traditional teachings and led a smudging ceremony.

In Indigenous cultures, sharing teachings, stories, and knowledge passed down from their ancestors is deeply important. It was a privilege to learn from these traditions and create space for connection, reflection, and appreciation within our community.

Thank you to Jennifer Kazeem, the GM of Somerset House who supports a community that values learning, inclusion and respect.  Events like this honour indigenous culture and foster meaningful conversations about ED&I.

It’s pizza night at Amica Unionville! 🍕

Our residents Pat and Gaye spent the evening in the kitchen with Camilo, our Director of Culinary Services, for a pizza making experience that was equal parts delicious and fun.

They stretched their own dough, picked their toppings, and got to enjoy the finished product hot from the oven.
