The 2026 tick season is shaping up to be one of the busiest we've seen in years.

According to the CDC, emergency department visits related to tick bites have reached their highest seasonal levels since tracking began in 2017. While these data are from the U.S., tick populations and Lyme disease risk continue to expand across many parts of Canada—making prevention more important than ever.

The good news? A few simple habits can dramatically reduce your risk.

✔️ Perform a full tick check every time you come indoors.
✔️ Shower soon after spending time outdoors.
✔️ Place outdoor clothing in the dryer on high heat for at least 10 minutes.
✔️ Use an effective tick repellent before heading outside.

If you develop a rash, fever, flu-like symptoms, or begin feeling unwell after a tick bite, don't ignore it. Early recognition and treatment can make a significant difference.

Knowledge is one of your best forms of prevention. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and enjoy the outdoors safely.

Lone Star Tick Alert: What You Need to Know 🕷️

The Lone Star tick—recognized by the distinctive white spot on the back of the adult female—is most common in the eastern and southern United States. However, it continues to expand its range northward, and specimens are being identified in Canada each year, making awareness more important than ever.

One of the most concerning conditions associated with this tick is Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS)—an allergy that can develop after certain tick bites.

When an affected tick bites, it can introduce a sugar molecule called alpha-gal into the body. In some people, this triggers an immune response that causes allergic reactions hours after eating red meat or other mammal-derived products.

🥩 Foods and products that may trigger a reaction include:
• Beef
• Pork
• Lamb
• Venison
• Dairy products
• Gelatin
• Some medications or products containing mammal-derived ingredients

⚠️ Symptoms of Alpha-gal Syndrome may include:
• Hives or itchy rash
• Nausea or vomiting
• Heartburn or indigestion
• Diarrhea
• Severe stomach pain
• Coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath
• Swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or eyelids
• Dizziness or fainting
• Drop in blood pressure

Unlike many food allergies, symptoms often appear 2–6 hours after eating, making AGS difficult to recognize.

While Lone Star ticks are the species most commonly linked to AGS in North America, research suggests that bites from other tick species may also trigger the condition in some regions.

The good news? Prevention starts with awareness. Checking for ticks after spending time outdoors, removing ticks promptly, and recognizing early symptoms can make a significant difference.

💚 Knowledge is power. Prevention is protection.

What if your “unrelated” symptoms aren’t actually unrelated? 🔍

When symptoms seem to affect different parts of the body, it can be difficult to understand how they fit together.

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) can be part of a bigger picture and may overlap with conditions such as Lyme disease and co-infections, mold-related illness, autoimmune conditions, and chronic inflammation.

At BioHeal Ottawa, we look beyond individual symptoms to explore the connections and patterns that may be contributing to how you feel.

Our systems-based, root-cause approach considers factors such as immune regulation, infections, environmental exposures, inflammation, lifestyle, nutrition, and your unique health history.

Because sometimes, the most important clue isn't one symptom—it's how the pieces fit together.

🌿 Your symptoms may be connected. Let’s look deeper.

If you're ready to explore the bigger picture, we're here to help.

🏡 Did you know one tick species can complete its entire life cycle inside your home?

Unlike most ticks, the brown dog tick can live, feed, and reproduce indoors. As long as dogs (and occasionally cats) are available as hosts, they can complete their entire life cycle without ever going outside. This means a few ticks can quickly become a household infestation if left unchecked.

📏 Swipe 1: Compare the size of each life stage—from larva to adult. Brown dog ticks are surprisingly small, making them easy to miss.

🐕 Brown dog ticks strongly prefer dogs and only rarely bite people.

⚠️ Although brown dog ticks are not known to transmit Lyme disease, they can carry organisms associated with Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Babesia, as well as other pathogens and parasites that affect dogs.

🗺️ Swipe 2: See where brown dog ticks have been identified across Canada through submissions to eTick Canada.

🤒 Swipe 3: Learn the symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. While cases in Canada are uncommon, early recognition and prompt medical attention are important if illness develops after a tick bite.

🔎 One helpful identification feature is the triangular-shaped mouthparts (capitulum), which can help distinguish brown dog ticks from some other common tick species.

📸 Found a tick? Submit a clear photo to eTick.ca for free species identification and to help researchers monitor tick populations across Canada.

💚 At BioHeal Ottawa, we believe education is one of the best tools for preventing tick-borne illness. Knowing what to look for helps protect both your family and your pets.

Knowledge is Your Best Protection.

Researchers at Office of Industry & Community Engagement estimate that blacklegged ticks are expanding their range by 35–55 km every year as our climate warms. That means more Canadians are likely to encounter ticks while enjoying the outdoors.

But this isn't about avoiding nature—it's about being prepared.

Whether you're hiking, gardening, walking the dog, or spending weekends at the cottage, knowing how to prevent tick bites, remove ticks safely, and recognize early signs of illness can make all the difference.

That's why Dr. Marie Matheson, ND, created Tick Bite Ready—a practical, evidence-informed online course designed to help you and your family enjoy the outdoors with confidence.

✔️ Learn prevention strategies
✔️ Know what to do if you find a tick
✔️ Feel informed—not fearful

Ready to enjoy summer with confidence? Enrol in Tick Bite Ready through the BioHeal Ottawa website or tap the Linktree in our bio.
