Most common pickleball injury :Tennis Elbow

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports, but the repetitive gripping and swinging motions can place significant stress on the elbow. This may lead to painful elbow, a condition commonly known as tennis elbow.

Symptoms often include pain on the outside of the elbow, weakness in grip strength, and discomfort when holding a paddle, lifting objects, or performing everyday activities.

Physiotherapy can effectively treat pickleball elbow by reducing pain, improving strength and flexibility, and addressing movement patterns that contribute to the injury. Early treatment can help prevent chronic symptoms and get you back on the court faster.

Proper technique, appropriate equipment, and regular recovery periods can help reduce the risk of developing tennis elbow.

Pickleball elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is a gradual overuse injury caused by repetitive forearm movements that strain the tendons on the outer side of the elbow. While common in racquet sports, any repetitive gripping or twisting activity can trigger this painful inflammation.
Key Features of the Injury
Gradual Onset: It develops over time from micro-tears, unlike sudden acute injuries like broken bones.
Specific Location: Pain anchors at the lateral epicondyle, the bony bump on the outer elbow.
Daily Impact: It weakens your grip and causes pain when twisting doors, holding cups, or shaking hands.
Actionable Management Steps
Rest: Pause the repetitive activity immediately to allow the tendon to heal.
Ice: Apply cold packs to the outer elbow for 15 minutes to reduce acute inflammation.
Gear Check: Switch to a lighter pickleball paddle or a thicker grip to lessen forearm strain.
Form Fix: Avoid flicking your wrist; use your shoulder and core to power your strokes.
Therapy: Perform gentle forearm stretches and eccentric strengthening exercises once pain subsides.

Would you like a targeted exercise routine to strengthen your forearm muscles, or do you want advice on choosing the right pickleball paddle grip size to prevent this injury?

Picklers, zero pain and strong all season !

Play with having confidence in your body and movements

If you are currently dealing with injuries, we get you back on the court with confidence. Improve your pickleball movements - footwork, reach, backhands, forehands, bending down etc.

My name is Feroz Nazim. I’m a physiotherapist who loves to play pickleball. My pickleball journey started with one of my patient coming with shoulder injury while playing pickleball.

I had no idea about pickleball at that time and while taking history my client told me about pickleball and how it is being played. Since i was already in paddle sports pickleball took my attention. I took lessons and within few months i was able to play among intermediate level players.

I was surprised to see how many players are injured on court and recovering from different types of injury, let it be shoulder ,knee ,back ankle etc Since i play pickleball myself now i can relate to injuries occurring at court and the recovery process.

Common upper body injuries in Pickleball

1-Repetitive swinging and gripping in pickleball often lead to overuse injuries in the upper body. Pickleball Elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is a frequent complaint, involving tendon inflammation caused by tight grips or repeated backhands.

2-The shoulder is also at risk, with rotator cuff tears or inflammation commonly resulting from repetitive overhead smashes and serves.

3-Wrist fractures are on the rise; these typically happen during falls when players instinctively extend their hands to break the impact.
