Hello my sweet friends, happy ! As I write this, the snow banks are piled high and the temperature is dropping, as Ottawa gears up for a February freeze.

But despite the snow and the winter and the chill, the days are (slowly) getting longer. My energy is (slowly) returning. We’re not out of hibernation just yet, but maybe you’re ready to bring in a little extra fire.

I made a tarot spread to honour this cross-quarter holiday. I’m not really a huge “wheel of the year” person, but I know a short and sweet can do wonders to help me tune into seasonal cycles.

How have you been settling into the new year?

If things have been feeling slow and sticky, you aren't alone.

We began the year with both Mercury and Mars retrograde. And even though they are now both direct, it will still take some time for them to build up speed.

When planets stand still in the sky, it can feel like we're stuck in between gears, or like we're hitting a wall. No matter how hard we try, we can't make progress. The trick in these moments is to stop pushing and let things take the time they take.

Aquarius season begins around 3am (ET) on January 20. We kick things off with a New Moon at 1° Aquarius on January 21. This also coincides with Venus conjoining Saturn in Aquarius at 24° (exact on January 22). This is a pretty somber and melancholy new moon. A necessary ending, a cycle of completion, a wrapping up.

Maybe you realize you've grown distant from a friend and are coming to terms with that change. Maybe you realize you need to make more room in your life for your family and spend less time out with friends. Maybe you're slowly accepting that staying up late watching TV and playing Animal Crossing leaves you super groggy and tired the next morning and maybe you should not do that? (it's me, hi, i'm the problem, it's me.)

Endings aren't always bad. Often, the endings that Saturn brings forward are things that we're holding onto out of habit or because we're afraid of change or because we like to avoid confrontation. Try to remember that every "no" also contains a "yes" — when you say no to hanging out with friends, you say yes to more time for yourself. when you say "no" to TV, you say "yes" to reading in bed for longer. On the other side of a difficult conversation is relief at finally clearing the air.

Last December, I treated myself to an order of magical materia from . (Because what’s the point of a day job if not to buy yourself treats?!)

Pictured here is the (Jupiter in Pisces) salve and the Quicksilver Tongue spray.

They are such delightful additions to my magical cabinet. The Butter Ocean makes me feel so calm and grounded. I love using it for moments of introspection (journaling, meditation, etc).

The Quicksilver Tongue is a *very* different vibe. The comments/reviews about almost feeling high when it’s applied is so real. I used the spray before a party on New Years Eve, I’ve used it to help me through social events & I’ve used it during busy times at the office, when I need some extra oomph. The shimmer and shine is GLORIOUS and I love watching it sparkle.

Right now, my magical practice is pretty low key. I’m trying to settle into a 15 minute per day routine of doing *something* magical/spiritual. But some (most) days all I can do is rub a little salve onto the backs of my hands. And that’s just as valid as the days when I do full tarot spreads and meditations and energy workings.

Is anybody else feeling the agonizing slowness of Mars stationing direct while Mercury is retrograde? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

Today, after seven long weeks of moving backwards through Gemini, Mars begins to change direction.

Whenever a planet stations, it must first slow down and pause before it begins to move again. This means that the planet of action and courage has been basically stationary on the sky. If you’ve felt stuck or like you are moving through mud or like you can’t make a decision… this might be why.

I made a lil tarot spread to help you get some deeper insight and perspective into what Mars’ retrograde through Gemini brought up for you. I hope it helps you make sense of the muck and find a way forward.

Welcome to a new year, friends! 2023 is a big year. After years of stagnation and frustration, the energy is shifting.

And lucky for you, I used my last day of vacation from my day job to write you a lil preview all about it ;)

The astrology of 2021 and 2022 was marked by Saturn, the planet of consolidation and obstacles facing off against Uranus, the planet of revolution and disruption. This has resulted in tectonic shifts — slow and subtle with moments of intense explosions of action and movement.Anger bubbling over. Outrage and backlash. Frustration and outcry. We’ve also had eclipses in Ta**us and Scorpio, further undermining the foundations of our lives — both individually and collectively.

But in 2023, the energy starts to shift. Saturn leaves Aquarius and enters Jupiter’s watery temple of Pisces. And Pluto, one of the slowest moving and most important planets for the collective, enters a new sign for the first time since 2008.

While these shifts might not be easy (especially depending on your birth chart), it will at least be different than what’s come before.

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, all I can think about is darkness. The sun begins to set at 3pm each day. By the time 5pm rolls around and I finish work for the day, it feels like night has settled around me like a blanket. Ottawa got 30cm of snow last week and I had forgotten how the sky turns white with clouds during a heavy snowstorm. It's officially winter and I am feeling it.

Capricorn is full of contradiction. Capricorn season begins on the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, a moment of maximum darkness. But it also marks the return of the light. Each day, we gain a tiny bit of light. It’s almost imperceptible, it's almost unimaginable... but it's happening.

And while technically the new year begins on January 1st, this year, I am using winter solstice as my personal new years. I will be using this time to get quiet and self-reflective. To revisit my goals. To dream about possibilities. To let go of the past and open myself to new beginnings.

It's a time of retreat, but also alchemy.

After a year and a half of running my business full-time and living my best life, I started a new, full-time job last month. Your girl is back to being a .

Capitalism is real. Inflation is real. Mortgage payments are real. And while I'm extremely happy with my new position (the digital communications lead for an environmental NGO doing amazing research and work on climate change), I am also wrestling with grief and feelings of failure.

For so long, my goal, my marker of success, was about doing this work full-time. Telling you — admitting to you — that I needed to go back to work... it feels like failure. Even though I "know" it's not, my body doesn't know that. My heart doesn't know that.

And I'm sharing this because maybe you feel the same way about something in your life. Maybe you aren't telling the whole truth because you're worried that people will judge you. Maybe you took a risk and it didn't work out quite the way you thought it would.

It fu***ng sucks and it hurts and it's not fun. But it's also not the end of the world. I'm still here. I tried, I had to pivot, and I'm still here.

At the end of the day, I am still an astrologer and tarot reader, no matter what my revenue is or how many clients I see or how many hours i work or whether or not I have an evergreen sales funnel and a million workshops. My business doesn't have to look a certain way for it be valid. (If I say it enough times, will I start to believe it?)

LUNAR ECLIPSE (full moon) at 16° TA**US 🌕♉️ This month’s lunar eclipse is what we in the astrology biz call “a doozy.” There is a *lot* going on, all of it very dramatic and overwhelming.

Eclipses are omens of change, and lunar eclipses, in particular, are associated with major endings and changes. During a lunar eclipse, the Moon takes on a reddish hue. Things become unstable. The structures we rely on suddenly become unreliable. But a the same time, new opportunities come forward. We are able to take leaps, move things forward, speed things up. The days before and after a lunar eclipse can feel very draining, so do your best to take care of your body and heart around this day.

This lunar eclipse takes place with the Moon and Uranus at 16° Ta**us. Uranus is the planet of revolutionary action, individual freedom and radical authenticity. It is incredibly destabilizing, but it’s also freeing. This lunar eclipse might make you more aware of the limits and structures in your life, and encourage you to break free of them.

The Moon governs our emotional and physical wellness, as well as our most intimate relationships. The Moon in Ta**us craves security and safety, but when conjunct Uranus, we might find that foundation suddenly unstable. This could be as mundane as realizing that eating wheat makes you feel gross or as dramatic as realizing you want to quit your job.

VENUS OPPOSITE URANUS, SQUARE SATURN 💥🌋 The next few days are tense for Venus, who moves through some very destabilizing transits.

Venus opposite Uranus can bring up issues of freedom, authenticity and independence in our relationships and social world. If you have been feeling stifled or restricted in some way, this might be the day when you make a move, break free and go toward what you truly desire. This might ultimately be good and healing for you, but it could cause some temporary disruptions in the meantime. This could be as minor as wearing clothes you wouldn’t normally wear or being a bit more eccentric/loud in your style. Or it could be as major as realizing you want to change your relationship status.

In two days, Venus will form a square with Saturn, meaning that whatever freedom and independence you are yearning for today might get curtailed by some kind of authority figure or maybe even just the weight of reality. But pay attention to your desire today — it’s telling you something important.

I’ve recently started doing for myself with .word.witch’s and ’s oracle deck and I LOVE how they work together. Inquire Within adds such lovely nuance and texture to tarot pulls. And Charlie’s deck is absolutely fu***ng amazing. Not only is the imagery q***r as f**k, it feels *amazing* to shuffle.

As eclipse season continues to be dramatic and overwhelming, I’m finding pockets of calm through my practices. Whether it’s doing a bit of collaging before work or building altars to help my friends, small touches of magic help remind me what is (and isn’t) within my control.
