Don’t tell my cats… but I want you to meet Fran, who showed up on Friday thinking she was covering for Alora at the front desk!!

Fran is actually a trained therapy dog who occasionally visits us at Connected Counselling Services. Marlee Johnston RP (Qualifying) is her mum- and when Fran’s not too busy answering the phones or cozying up to me- she’s living her best life on Instagram at .

Here’s the thing: that photo of me (Adrienne) cuddling up to Franny? That’s not just a cute photo. That’s evidence of Fran’s gentleness! As someone who spent years being genuinely afraid of dogs, me now voluntarily pressing my face against one SAYS A LOT about her personality!

No judgment. No pressure. Fran just shows up, being gentle, co-regulating as she goes, and good things happen.

Don’t worry. If dogs aren’t your thing but therapy is, we’ve still got you. If neither feels safe yet, that’s okay too. We’ll meet you there.

Friends- we have some bittersweet news to share! We are saying a heartfelt goodbye to our wonderful Jess, who is moving on to focus on her other career. Jess, your warmth, dedication, and brilliant insurance billing skills made Connected Counselling Services a better place. We are so grateful for everything you brought to our team and wish you all the best in your next chapter!!! 🥲

And now for the exciting part - we are thrilled to welcome Katy to the Connected Counselling Services family! A York University graduate in Behavioural Psychology, Katy brings exactly what we love in a team member: genuine warmth, and a gift for making people feel at ease the moment they walk through the door. Known for her kindness, positive energy, and ability to build real connections, she fits right in with the rest of the team. Recently making the move from Toronto to the Ottawa Valley, she is fully embracing small-town life and everything that comes with it - and we could not be happier to have her!

When she is not brightening our waiting room or navigating a benefits claim like a pro, you will find her deep in a board game, rewatching a Disney classic, or being supervised by one of her five cats 🐈.

CCS is growing and we are so excited to introduce our newest therapist, Stephanie Belaire, RSW!

Stephanie is already a familiar face in our community, known for her incredible work with children and families, and we are so thrilled she is bringing that experience and heart to our team.

Her approach is trauma-informed, relational and collaborative - which is just a fancy way of saying she will actually meet you where you are and help you make sense of what you are carrying in a way that feels real and manageable. She supports people navigating anxiety, trauma, grief, burnout, life transitions, parenting stress, relationship challenges and emotional regulation - and she works with kids and teens too, as well as the parents trying to figure it all out alongside them.

Stephanie also has a special place in her heart for perinatal mental health. Pregnancy, postpartum, fertility, birth trauma, perinatal loss - if you are in that season of life and struggling, she is exactly who you want in your corner.

This is a portrait of Lili Elbe, painted by her wife, artist Gerda Wegener. Dated 1929, it is one of the earliest known artistic representations of a transgender woman.

Lili was among the first trans people to live openly and publicly, and to pursue gender-affirming surgery - a series of pioneering procedures performed in Berlin and Dresden. Tragically, she died in 1931 from complications following her final surgery.

What makes this portrait so striking is how Gerda painted Lili - not as spectacle, not as curiosity, but with beauty, elegance, and full humanity. I’m also such a fan of Lili’s flapper style- what an icon!!

In the hallway at in the clinic, before you reach the stairs, there’s a portrait.

It’s Audre Lorde, photographed by Jack Mitchell.

Lorde was a poet, essayist, Black feminist, q***r theorist, and cancer activist who wrote about what it costs to live at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities - and what it means to refuse to be silent about any of them. She wrote about rage, grief, erotic power, illness, and survival not as separate subjects but as one continuous act of resistance. She was a powerful and influential black woman, and I love this portrait of her.

The clients who come through our doors carry their own versions of things she wrote about. I felt that she belonged in our space - because those experiences have been named, honoured, explored, and held by an extraordinary human, fearlessly. What a role model!

Art is a powerful way to communicate inclusivity. Sone of you may know I’m passionate about inclusivity- and street art!

On the wall in one of our bathrooms at Connected Counselling Services hangs a print by Mahn Kloix, a street artist from Marseille.
It’s called Le Mur d’Oberkampf, and it tells a real story - about Shaza and Jimena, two women who fled Dubai (where homosexuality is punishable by death), who survived a Turkish prison, and who were eventually freed through the intervention of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They are kissing. They made it.

I found this piece in Barcelona on my honeymoon and knew immediately it belonged in our clinic!

The art on our walls is one way I can signal to our community, without ambiguity, that every identity is not just tolerated at Connected Counselling Services - it’s welcomed, reflected, and celebrated 🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🖤🩶🤍

Guys… am I ever tired! But grinning, ear to ear! CCS has arrived in our forever home at 421 Boundary Rd E., and we are settling in!

We hope that those of you who’ve had a chance to visit the new clinic have been as thrilled as we are as we aim to keep comfort, accessibility and inclusivity at front of mind. And we try to keep it stylish at the same time!

I’d like to take a moment to thank every one of you out there who helped out with this transition- I am especially looking at you guys, Alora and Jess- as well as everyone who offered to help. I may not have taken you up on it, since I don’t like to drag people through my chaotic process… but I felt very supported 🩷

Have I realized how much I struggle with perfectionism? ☑️😮‍💨 SURE HAVE

Do I ever want to do this again? UNDECIDED

Am I super proud of this big project? IT’S STILL SINKING IN that we’ve even arrived - neurodivergent me needs time!

Hello followers & friends! Happy mid-February to you all!

I (Adrienne) am happily planning, gathering and making in preparation for our move into our new forever home at 421 Boundary Road on March 20th! (More info is to come on the details for that, for all of our much-loved clients, present and future ❤️)

My vision for the entire clinic has always been to create accessible spaces for healing and deep work that are both calming enough to relax into but also lively and full of life- to remind us all that safety is possible inside all of us, alongside our vitality and being fully alive; to spark joy and inspire, but also to allow the body and mind to fully unwind. Part of that is adding the right hand-made touches and art that resonates. Curating these spaces has been my favourite part of this relocation process- I far prefer this to dealing with the soul-draining logistical aspects of a move 😅
