MYTH OR FACT?

Myth: Plantar fasciitis is just heel pain — better shoes will fix it.

Fact: Footwear can be a contributing factor, but plantar fasciitis is a condition involving irritation of the plantar fascia — the band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot — and it often has more than one cause.

Biomechanical factors, foot structure, activity level, and how load is distributed through the foot can all play a role. That's why what works for one person doesn't always work for another.

A proper assessment can help identify what's actually driving the problem — and what's most likely to help.

Our team can assess your situation and talk through your options, including whether custom orthotics may be appropriate.

No referral needed. Give us a call at 519-583-0552.

Back to school season is almost here — and if your kids are hauling heavy backpacks, it's worth a quick check.

A few things to keep in mind:

— A loaded backpack should not exceed 10-15% of your child's body weight. More than that puts real strain on the spine and shoulders.
— Both straps should always be used. A single-shoulder carry shifts the load unevenly and can contribute to muscle imbalance over time.
— The bag should sit close to the back — not hanging low. The bottom of the pack should rest at the waist, not below it.
— If your child is regularly complaining of back, neck, or shoulder pain, it's worth getting assessed. These things are very manageable when caught early.

Our team works with patients of all ages. If something has been bothering your child — or you — we're happy to take a look.

No referral needed. Direct billing available for most plans. Call us at 519-583-0552.

DID YOU KNOW?

Therapeutic ultrasound is not the same as the diagnostic ultrasound used for imaging — and it works quite differently.

In a clinical setting, therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves to deliver energy deep into soft tissue. Depending on how it's applied, it may help support tissue healing, reduce muscle spasm, and address certain types of soft tissue conditions.

It's non-invasive, generally well-tolerated, and used as part of a broader care plan — not as a standalone treatment.

Curious whether therapeutic ultrasound may be appropriate for your situation? Our team is happy to help.

Give us a call at 519-583-0552 — no referral needed.

MYTH OR FACT?

Myth: The best thing you can do after an injury is rest completely until the pain is gone.

Fact: For most musculoskeletal injuries, prolonged rest can actually slow recovery. Controlled, appropriate movement — introduced at the right time and in the right amount — helps maintain circulation, reduce stiffness, and support tissue healing.

The key is knowing what movement is appropriate for your specific injury and where you are in the healing process. That's exactly what a proper assessment helps determine.

If you've been sidelined by an injury and aren't sure what to do next, our team can help you figure out the right approach.

No referral needed. Direct billing available for most plans. Call us at 519-583-0552.

Understanding Shoulder Impingement
With Barbara DeSerrano, Physiotherapist, RPT, CAFCI

Shoulder pain that gets worse when you reach overhead — or wakes you up at night? It may be shoulder impingement syndrome, and it's more common than you might think.

Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles become irritated as they pass through the subacromial space. It's particularly associated with tendonitis of the supraspinatus muscle, and can result in pain, weakness, and loss of movement at the shoulder.

A few things that may contribute:
— Repetitive overhead activities — swimming, baseball, tennis, volleyball, paper hanging, construction, or painting
— A minor injury, sometimes without an obvious cause
— Gradual wear on the rotator cuff tendons over time

What might you notice?
— Pain and stiffness when lifting your arm or reaching overhead
— Pain when bringing your arm back down
— Symptoms that tend to be worse at night
— In more progressed cases: significant sleep disruption, loss of strength and motion, or difficulty with everyday tasks like getting dressed or fastening a seatbelt

What can physiotherapy do?

A complete evaluation of your shoulder can help determine what's contributing to the problem. From there, your care plan may include:
— Postural assessment and correction
— Techniques to help decrease inflammation and pain
— Education on why it occurred and how to prevent it going forward

If you have questions or would like a shoulder evaluation completed by a registered physiotherapist, our team is here to help.

Call us at 519-583-0552 to book — no referral needed. Direct billing available. WSIB and MVA accepted.
