Massage therapy is one of the most widely used therapeutic health services in Canada…yet it’s the only major regulated therapy still charging patients GST/HST. When someone sees a physiotherapist, chiropractor, or psychotherapist, their care is tax-free. When they see a Registered Massage Therapist for the same clinical reason, they pay tax on it.
That’s not fair, and it’s not affordable. The good news: the federal government has already confirmed thatmassage therapy meets the criteria for a GST/HST exemption, and it used the exact same mechanism to make psychotherapy tax-free in 2024. What’s left is a decision…and the fall 2026 budget is being written right now.
