The Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA), Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre (NGFC), and Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA) have partnered together for this year’s Truth & Reconciliation activities.
Please join us for a variety of events, activities, and opportunities to come together, learn, reflect, and honour Survivors, their families, and the children who never returned home. We encourage community members, staff, families, and organizations to take part in the activities happening throughout the week.

Is your organization hosting an event during the same week (September 29–October 2)? We’d love to help share it with the community! If you have an event you would like added to the calendar, please email the details to: [email protected]

Let’s come together to learn, remember, honour, and take meaningful steps toward reconciliation.
Every Child Matters. 🧡

From August 17 to 21, SLFNHA's Anishinaabewaadiziwin department hosted Kiiwe Minoyaawin Wholistic Family Camp at Onaman Ziibi Cultural Camp.

Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community facilitators shared their teachings with families, youth, children, and staff. Wapesii Wellness led culturally-based workshops on mental health and wellness, looking at wellbeing as a whole — mind, body, heart, and spirit.

The camp is built on culture from the ground up to create a safe place for healing, learning, and belonging. Teachings that come from the communities were shared, practiced, and passed on. Staff from Anishinaabewaadiziwin worked alongside other departments to lead cultural teachings with children and youth.

On the final day, youth asked for a naming ceremony. It was a special moment for all involved.

Chi-miigwech to everyone who shared their knowledge and their time.

The Community Canvas: Your Health. Your Community. Your Voice.

Calling all youth ages 5–18 from SLFNHA communities!

We want to see your creativity, your ideas, and your vision for health and wellbeing in your community!

As part of this year’s Fun in the Sun campaign, SLFNHA has launched The Community Canvas, a new youth showcase where you can share your ideas through original artwork or a short message. This showcase started on August 1st. The last day to enter is September 1st, 2026.

Fun in the Sun Theme:
“What does being safe on the land and water mean to you?”

Prizes include:
Bike Safety Package – bike, bike lock, front/rear brake lights, water bottle, first aid kit, and reflective vest/bands
Fishing/Water Safety Package – fishing rod, tackle box, boat safety kit, lifejacket, waterproof dry bag, whistle, flashlight, and first aid kit
ATV Safety Package – ATV helmet, high-visibility vest, safety goggles, work gloves, handwarmers, headlamp, emergency blanket, and first aid kit

And your creativity could reach even more people!

Selected submissions may be featured in a future SLFNHA Community Health Calendar and/or other health promotion material, giving youth an opportunity to share their voices and ideas with communities across the region.

This year’s showcase is being piloted through Fun in the Sun, with the potential for The Community Canvas to become an annual ACW youth initiative featuring different health and wellness themes throughout the year.
