Let’s Talk – Couples & Changing Care Needs

You’ve spent years building a life together — so what happens when one person begins to need more support than the other?

It’s a situation many couples face as they age. One partner may remain completely independent while the other begins to need assistance with medications, personal care, mobility, meals, or other daily activities.

Often, the more independent spouse gradually becomes the caregiver. While this comes from a place of love, over time it can change the relationship. Instead of simply being a husband, wife, or partner, much of their time and energy can become focused on providing care.

Retirement living can offer another option.

With the right supports in place, couples may be able to continue living together while receiving different levels of assistance based on their individual needs. The partner who needs additional help can receive support, while the more independent partner can continue enjoying their own routines, activities, friendships, and independence.

At Lanes Retirement Living, we also offer an Assisted Living floor, providing another option when one spouse's care needs have progressed to the point where it is no longer safe for the couple to live together in the same suite. This can allow both partners to remain within the same Lanes community, close to one another, while each receives the level of support and living environment that is right for them.

It means couples can continue sharing meals, participating in activities, visiting throughout the day, and spending meaningful time together — without one spouse having to take on care that has become too difficult or unsafe.

Every couple’s situation is different. Starting the conversation early gives you more time to understand your options and make decisions together.

Different care needs don’t have to mean being apart.

To kick off our posts from our Annual Music & Friends Festival, we have to start with our very own Shelly!

Every year, Shelly gets into character and puts on a special performance for our residents—and this year, she treated us to some Dolly Parton!

Thank you, Shelly, for once again sharing your beautiful voice and bringing so much fun and personality to our festival. It was perfect timing to celebrate and remember some wonderful Dolly songs together.

Our residents loved every minute of it!

Let’s Talk – Document Readiness

Planning for the future isn’t only about deciding where you want to live — it’s also about making sure the right documents are in place before they’re needed.

Having important legal and health-care documents prepared can help ensure your wishes are understood and that the right people are able to support you if you’re unable to make decisions for yourself.

Some important documents and designations to consider include:

Power of Attorney (POA) – Identifies who can manage financial and legal matters on your behalf, according to the authority provided in the document.

Substitute Decision Maker (SDM) – The person authorized to make certain health-care decisions on your behalf if you are unable to make those decisions yourself.

Advance Health Care Directive (AHCD) – Allows you to document your wishes regarding future health-care decisions and identify who you want involved in making those decisions.

Having these conversations and documents in place before a crisis happens can make future transitions easier for you, your family, and those supporting your care.

Get informed. Have the conversation. Get your documents ready.

Not sure what documents may be important when considering retirement or personal care living? Our team at Lanes Retirement Living can help explain what information is commonly needed as you prepare for the next chapter.

For advice about preparing or changing legal documents, speak with an appropriate legal or health-care professional.
