Many families are surprised to learn that while publicly funded home care provides essential support for seniors, it may not always address every need that arises throughout the day.

As care needs change, many families find themselves filling the gaps : coordinating appointments, helping with meals, providing companionship, or balancing caregiving responsibilities alongside work and family life.

Private in-home care can help bridge these gaps by offering:

✅ Flexible support between scheduled care visits, on call when you need it
✅ Assistance with daily activities, companionship, and household tasks
✅ Relief and peace of mind for family caregivers

Ongoing in-home care support can greatly improve your loved one’s quality of life, making it possible to age safely, comfortably, and independently at home.

Every family’s situation is unique, and understanding the available options can help seniors maintain their independence while giving loved ones greater confidence and support.

As summer heats up, hydration becomes one of the simplest and most important ways to protect health, especially for older adults.

For seniors, the body’s ability to conserve water naturally decreases with age, and the sense of thirst can become less reliable. That means dehydration can happen quickly and often without obvious warning signs.

Staying properly hydrated supports everything from energy levels and cognition to blood pressure regulation, joint health, and temperature control. Even mild dehydration can increase the risk of confusion, dizziness, falls, and urinary tract infections.

A few simple habits can make a big difference:

✅ Offer fluids regularly throughout the day, not just when someone feels thirsty
✅ Include hydrating foods like fruit, soups, and vegetables
✅ Keep water easily accessible and visible
✅ Watch for subtle signs like fatigue, dry mouth, or changes in alertness

At Compass Homecare, we see firsthand how small daily routines like hydration can meaningfully support independence and well-being through the summer months.

Enjoy the sun and warmer months, from your friends at Compass Homecare.

Compass Homecare Presents: Gentle mornings, slow movements for seniors.

A note before we begin: be sure to consult your healthcare professional before starting any new exercise routine to ensure the activities are appropriate for your individual abilities and health needs.

Invite your loved one, enjoy for yourself, or do it together, a peaceful morning wellness experience right in your own space.

🟢 Step 1: Set the Scene
Choose a shaded spot in the garden, on a patio, or even on a balcony. A sturdy chair, light blanket, and a bottle of water are all you need. Let nature be your backdrop—greenery, breeze, and the warmth of early light.

🟢 Step 2: Gentle Movement & Stretch
Begin with this calming seated stretch and gentle movement session:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BcPHWGQO44

This 10-minute video offers a simple, low-impact routine suitable for most mobility levels. No experience necessary. Just follow along and breathe.

🟢 Step 3: Reflection, Stillness, & Breath
After movement, remain seated or recline in a comfortable position. Begin the quiet time. No screens. No schedule. Just 30 minutes of peace and presence.

Play this curated morning playlist softly in the background:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HPGVCeURlY&list=RD8HPGVCeURlY&start_radio=1

Encourage deep breathing:

✔ Inhale through the nose (4 seconds)
✔ Hold (4 seconds)
✔ Exhale slowly through the mouth (6 seconds)
✔ Repeat gently.

Use this time for reflection, gratitude, or simply enjoying the moment. If journaling is helpful, keep a notepad nearby.

This simple program supports physical flexibility, calm the nervous system, and nurtures emotional well-being. It’s an act of care, for yourself or someone you love. At Compass Homecare, we believe in creating moments that nourish the whole person.

June is ALS Awareness Month, supported by ALS Canada.

While many people may have heard of ALS via the walks or the ice bucket challenge from a few years back, you may not know some of the real statistics.

➡️ Approximately 1,000 Canadians are diagnosed with ALS each year

ALS can affect people of all backgrounds, creating significant physical, emotional, and caregiving challenges for individuals and families alike. Access to compassionate care and community support can make a meaningful difference throughout the ALS journey. Did you know that Compass Homecare is an expert provider in ALS care? ➡️ ALS affects more than movement: it impacts entire families

As ALS progresses, many individuals require increasing support with daily activities, communication, and mobility. In-home care can help individuals maintain comfort, dignity, and independence for as long as possible. As an expert provider of ALS care, we understand that the needs go beyond the person served, but the emotional wellbeing of the entire family.

➡️ Multidisciplinary ALS care improves quality of life and can extend survival

Research shows that coordinated care, including neurologists, respiratory therapists, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and in-home support helps people living with ALS manage symptoms and maintain independence longer.

As a homecare provider in your community, we recognize and observe June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, supported by Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario.

Did you know...

➡️ 1 in 10 Older Adults Experience Abuse

Studies indicate that 8–10% of older adults experience some form of elder abuse. Elder abuse can be physical, emotional, financial, sexual, or neglect. Many cases happen behind closed doors and go unreported.

➡️ Most Cases Are Never Reported

Only 1 in 5 incidents of elder abuse comes to the attention of someone who can help. Fear, isolation, dependence, and shame often prevent older adults from speaking up.

➡️ Financial Abuse Is the Most Common Form

Financial abuse is considered the most common form of elder abuse, often committed by someone the older adult knows and trusts. Warning signs can include unusual withdrawals, pressure around money, or sudden changes in financial control.

Strong support systems can help reduce the risk of elder abuse. Regular companionship, professional care, and staying connected all play an important role in protecting the wellbeing, dignity, and safety of older adults. Vitamin D is very important for seniors' health, promoting bone strength, immune function, and mood enhancement. Here are four safe ways for seniors to enjoy the outdoors and boost their vitamin D levels this summer:

Morning Walks: Enjoy the cooler morning hours with a gentle walk in the park or around the neighborhood, within a safe distance and individual abilities. Use mobility devices, such as canes and rollators that assist with making physical activity safer and possible.

Gardening: Engage in light gardening activities, ensuring time in the shade and staying hydrated.

Outdoor Socializing: Host or attend outdoor gatherings with family and friends, under umbrellas or shaded areas.

Outdoor Yoga and Tai Chi: Participate in low-impact exercises like yoga or Tai Chi in a shaded area, promoting flexibility and relaxation, within our individual abilities.

Let’s encourage our seniors to get outside safely and soak up the benefits of vitamin D while staying active!
