June is ALS Awareness Month, supported by ALS Canada. With ALS being an area of expertise and a part of our founding history, it’s important to us to discuss, and share information & resources on the topic.

While most of us have heard about the ALS walks that happens across Canada during the month of June, many do not know the impact that they have.

👞 The Walk is the largest community fundraiser for ALS in Canada

The ALS Canada Walk to End ALS is the largest annual community fundraising event in the country supporting ALS research, advocacy, and care services. Funds raised through the Walk directly power both national research programs and local community support for people living with ALS. Find a walk near you here: https://walktoendals.ca/participate-or-donate/ontario/

💜 100% of proceeds go directly to impact

Funds raised through the Walk are directed to the ALS Canada Research Program, which invests in peer-reviewed, high-impact ALS research across Canada. In participating provinces, proceeds also fund community-based services like equipment loans, home visits, and caregiver support for families affected by ALS.

🧠 Every Walk supports both research + care in Canada

In participating provinces, Walk funds are typically split to maximize impact:

✔️ Research funding (approx. 40%) supports scientific breakthroughs toward treatments and a cure
✔️ Community support (approx. 60%) helps deliver direct services like equipment, education, and support programs for families living with ALS

As an expert care provider for ALS in your community, we are here to support your loved one and family. Learn more about our approach to ALS care here: https://compasshomecare.ca/services/als-care/

What does quality of life and aging in place really mean for seniors today?

At Compass Homecare, we often hear the same question from families: what does “quality of life” really mean for seniors aging at home?

The answer is rarely just about medical needs. It is about the everyday moments that create comfort, dignity, and independence in familiar surroundings.

Aging at home can mean:

• Waking up in your own space, surrounded by personal memories
• Maintaining daily routines that bring structure and confidence
• Staying connected to family, friends, and community
• Having support available when it is needed, without giving up independence
• Continuing to enjoy small but meaningful parts of daily life, like meals, hobbies, and conversation

With the right support in place, many seniors are able to remain at home safely while still living life on their own terms. Home care plays an important role in bridging that balance between independence and assistance, ensuring that needs are met without taking away autonomy.

At Compass Homecare, we believe aging at home should feel exactly that, like home. Our focus is on delivering thoughtful, personalized care that supports not just health, but overall well-being and lifestyle.

Because quality of life is not just about living longer. It is about living well, where you feel most comfortable.

At Compass Homecare, we are proud to support May as MS Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, foster understanding, and support those living with multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease that affects the central nervous system, often impacting mobility, vision, cognition, and overall quality of life. Each person’s experience with MS is unique, which makes awareness and education especially important.

In Canada, the impact is significant:

• More than 90,000 Canadians are living with MS
• Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world
• On average, 12 Canadians are diagnosed every day

MS Awareness Month is about more than statistics. It is about recognizing the real experiences of individuals and families, and ensuring that no one has to navigate their journey alone.

At Compass Homecare, we are a leader in complex care, providing compassionate, personalized support for individuals living with conditions like MS. From daily care needs to emotional support, our team is dedicated to enhancing quality of life through thoughtful, specialized care. Learn more: https://compasshomecare.ca/services/complex-care/

This May, we encourage our community to learn more, start conversations, and support the ongoing efforts in research, advocacy, and care.

On May 19th, we recognize today as Personal Support Worker Day and celebrate the compassionate individuals who form the backbone of care across Canada.

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) play a critical role in supporting individuals with daily living, dignity, and quality of life, whether at home, in hospital, or in long-term care.

Some important facts that highlight their impact:

• There are approximately 350,000 PSWs across Canada, providing essential care in home, hospital, and residential settings
• In Ontario alone, there are an estimated 100,000 PSWs, making them one of the largest groups in the healthcare workforce
• PSWs are the primary caregivers in long-term care, supporting the majority of residents’ daily needs
• Despite growing demand, Ontario faces a shortage of over 20,000 PSWs in long-term care
• Workforce challenges persist, with 63% of PSWs considering leaving their roles due to burnout and working conditions

As Canada’s population ages, the demand for PSWs continues to grow rapidly. These professionals are essential not only to our healthcare system, but to the well-being of families and communities across the country.

At Compass Homecare, we see firsthand the dedication, empathy, and resilience PSWs bring to their work every day. Today, we extend our sincere gratitude to the PSWs who make compassionate care possible.

💙 Thank you for all that you do.

May 12th is International Nurses Day, within National Nurses Week May 11-17.

This year’s theme is: The Power of Nurses to Transform Health.

This theme highlights the incredible impact nurses have in shaping health care, driving innovation, and advocating for patient-centred care. National Nursing Week serves as an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the hard work and dedication of nurses across Canada and around the world.
