Numbness or tingling in your leg?
The location can sometimes give a clue about which nerve area may be irritated.
Here are 3 common patterns:
• L4 area
Numbness may be felt around the front of the thigh, knee, or inner lower leg.
• L5 area
Symptoms may travel along the outer leg and toward the top of the foot or big toe.
• S1 area
Numbness or tingling may be felt along the back of the leg, outer calf, or outer side of the foot.
But symptoms do not always follow a perfect map.
Two people with the same irritated nerve can feel symptoms in slightly different places.
That is why it is important to look at the full pattern:
• Where the numbness starts
• How far it travels
• Whether weakness is also present
• What positions or movements make it better or worse
If numbness is getting worse, you notice increasing leg weakness, numbness around the groin area, or changes in bladder or bowel control, seek medical care promptly.
