During Indigenous History Month, we honour the lives and legacies of Indigenous leaders who helped shape Canada often while facing significant barriers.

Oliver Milton Martin, a Kanyen'kehà:ka (Mohawk) educator, soldier, and trailblazer, dedicated his life to service from the battlefields of two World Wars to classrooms and courtrooms in Ontario. As the highest ranking Indigenous officer of his time and later Ontario’s first Indigenous provincial magistrate, his story reflects courage, leadership, and perseverance.

Today, we remember not only his achievements, but the broader legacy of Indigenous resilience and contributions that continue to shape our communities. He is laid to rest within our care at Pine Hills Cemetery, where his legacy continues to be remembered.

Sometimes, the places we’re drawn to hold more than history, hold connection.

For Heather Ainsley, years of walking through Mount Pleasant Group's Toronto Necropolis cemetery out of pure curiosity eventually led to an unexpected discovery: her own family story woven into the very grounds she has long loved. Through genealogical research, cemetery records, and a growing sense of wonder, Heather traced her ancestors back to early Toronto and found a deeper feeling of home and belonging along the way.

As part of Mount Pleasant Group’s 200 Stories Project, we’re honoured to share stories like Heather’s, reminders that cemeteries are not only places of remembrance but living archives of the people who helped shape our city.

Our Elgin Mills Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Centres team has launched a tree planting initiative focused on supporting greener, and healthier neighbourhoods. Led by local staff, trees are being planted across the community and will continue throughout the season.

Each tree planted reflects a commitment to sustainability, shared stewardship, and being a responsible, community focused partner for today and the future. We’re proud of our staff for taking meaningful, hands on steps to support the environment and strengthen the communities around us.

Today, on Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we’re reminded that accessibility is an ongoing journey, shaped by learning, collaboration, and action across our teams.

Few weeks ago, members of our team Jeff Dennis (Director, Development) and Rita Chimienti (Project Management Specialist, Interiors, Development) attended the 2026 Accessibility Professionals Network (APN) Conference in Toronto, where sessions explored everything from national accessibility initiatives to creating more inclusive experiences in our communities.

Did you know? Mount Pleasant Group offers ListenWiFi? It allows guests to access audio through their smartphones or venue-provided receivers for assistive or personal listening. We're pleased to offer this service at six of our sites - Elgin Mills, Meadowvale, Mount Pleasant, Pine Hills, Thornton and York.

This is one of the many ways we’re working together to ensure everyone can fully participate in services and gatherings and feel supported in our spaces.

We remain committed to learning, improving, and taking meaningful steps towards a more accessible Mount Pleasant Group. 💙

“You’re never going to take their pain away, but you do the best you can,” said Ian. “It was important to try to make the impossible happen or to accommodate a wish to help people through a difficult time in some small way.” — Ian Young

As Mount Pleasant Group marks 200 years in 2026, we are sharing stories that reflect the people, histories, and connections that have shaped our cemeteries through the 200 Stories Project.

One of those stories comes from Ian Young, whose 46-year career began near Prospect Cemetery and grew into decades of leadership across our properties. From supporting families in difficult moments to helping shape how our grounds are cared for today, Ian’s impact continues to be felt in both the land and the people who care for it.

His story reflects the quiet, compassionate work that defines our purpose then and now. Enjoy the clicks captured by Ian across different sites, offering a glimpse into the places and moments that meant so much throughout his journey.

🐝 It’s World Bee Day and we’re buzzing with excitement to share some sweet news!

This spring, we are welcoming honey bee hives at four of Mount Pleasant Group’s locations – Meadowvale Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Centres, Prospect Cemetery, Duffin Meadows Cemetery, and Pine Hills Cemetery and Funeral Centre.

As part of this project, MPG will host community workshops at some of our locations, led by The Beekeeper Dan. This initiative brings attention to the importance of pollinator biodiversity, while offering hands-on learning experiences around bees, urban greening, and small, meaningful actions that support local ecosystems.

And yes… there will be honey. 🍯 💛

Congratulations to Janet Davis on the launch of Trees & Shrubs of Mount Pleasant Cemetery! 🌿📚

Janet is a freelance garden writer and photographer with a remarkable 38-year career, formerly a weekly gardening columnist for two Toronto newspapers, an online garden magazine editor, and a contributor to books and magazines (including Trellis and the Toronto Botanical Garden’s website).

This book is the fruit of three decades of her visits to Mount Pleasant Cemetery, observing and photographing the arboretum in all four seasons, now beautifully published by Firefly Books. Janet’s book is a beautiful tribute to the living landscape of Mount Pleasant Cemetery, inviting readers to slow down, notice, and learn more about the remarkable trees and shrubs that make this space so special.

It’s especially fitting to celebrate this release in a milestone year, as Mount Pleasant Cemetery marks 150 years and Mount Pleasant Group marks 200 years.
