Screens are part of school, work and downtime, and that's okay! 📱 But as the weather cools and kids spend more time indoors, it's a good time to talk about balance.

Myopia (nearsightedness) is becoming more common in kids, and lots of close-up time with less time outside can play a role. A few simple habits can help:

🌳 Get outside every day. Natural light and looking far away are great for growing eyes, even on chilly days.
⏱️ Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
📏 Keep screens and books at a comfortable distance, about arm's length.

Your eyes are watering... so how could they be dry? 🤔

It sounds backwards, but watery eyes are one of the most common signs of dry eye. When your eyes get dry and irritated, they send out a flood of "emergency" tears. Those tears are mostly water and don't have the oils needed to stay on your eye, so they just run down your cheeks instead of protecting it.

And this time of year, it gets worse. With temperatures dropping, we're spending more time indoors, with the furnace running at home and the heater blasting in the car. We're also spending more time on our phones, tablets and TVs. When we focus on a screen, we blink less, so our tears evaporate faster. All of it adds up to drier eyes.

As the days get shorter, we spend more of our time under artificial light: office lights, store lights, phones, laptops and TVs. For people who are sensitive to light, that can make fall and winter tough.
