DIABETES & NEUROPATHY: KNOW YOUR FEET
Did you know that diabetes can cause nerve damage (neuropathy), which commonly affects the feet and lower legs?
When sensation is reduced, you may not always feel an injury, pressure point, or irritation on your feet — and that can allow small problems to become bigger ones.
Some signs of neuropathy can include:
• Burning or tingling
• Sharp or shooting pains
• “Pins and needles” sensations
• Throbbing or unusual sensations
• Numbness or reduced ability to feel pain, heat, or cold
One of the biggest concerns with reduced sensation is that you may not feel an injury happening. A poorly fitting shoe, a small piece of debris, or an area of repeated pressure can cause damage without you realizing it.
How can you protect your feet?
Check your feet every day — including the bottoms. Use a mirror if needed.
Wear properly fitting footwear and avoid shoes that create pressure points.
Don't ignore changes such as redness, swelling, blisters, wounds, or areas of unusual warmth.
Have your feet and sensation checked regularly by a healthcare professional.
Seek medical attention promptly if you notice a wound or other concerning change.
Take a look at your feet today — they deserve the same attention you give the rest of your health.🦶✨
