Why do humanoid robots attract billions while rehabilitation robots are still asked to prove they deserve a billing code?

It is not because rehabilitation matters less. It is because capital understands labour substitution far more easily than it understands human recovery. A humanoid has a simple story: One robot. One worker replaced. One productivity equation.

Rehabilitation is harder. A rehabilitation technology has to fit the patient, therapist workflow, clinical evidence, procurement process, reimbursement model, maintenance programme and ultimately demonstrate that better recovery is worth paying for.

That complexity has held the field back. But I also think it points to the opportunity. Rehabilitation robotics does not need another “better robot” story. It needs to become accountable recovery infrastructure.
The real questions should be: How much recovery capacity can we create per therapist? Which patients benefit, at what dose?

Can we measure functional improvement longitudinally? Can technology reduce clinical burden without removing clinical judgement? And can we connect those outcomes to an economic model that hospitals and payers can actually fund?

AI matters here too — but not as an “AI-powered” label. It matters when it helps us stratify patients, adapt therapy, identify non-response, reduce documentation burden and turn real-world rehabilitation into payer-grade evidence. The future of rehabilitation technology may depend less on making robots look more impressive — and more on making recovery economically visible.

That is a much harder problem. It may also be the more important one. https://zenkoh.substack.com/p/why-humanoids-get-the-money-while

Three intense but very rewarding days at REHACARE Asia / Medical Fair Asia 2026.

A major highlight was the MotusAcademy × REHACARE Asia Leadership Forum — “From Pilot to Practice: Closing Asia’s Rehabilitation Technology Adoption Gap.” Thank you again to Adj A/Prof Loh Yong Joo, Prof Tan Boon Yeow, Dr Hsiao-ju (Rita) Cheng and Ms Goh Shi Min for bringing such thoughtful and practical perspectives to the discussion.

It was also meaningful to witness the St Luke’s Hospital × Robotimize MOU signing — a concrete step towards translating rehabilitation robotics and technology into real-world clinical and community implementation.

Beyond the forum, the three days were packed with back-to-back meetings, reconnecting with old friends, meeting new ones, reviewing interesting technologies and exploring potential collaborations.

The biggest takeaway for me remains simple: Innovation is only the beginning. Real impact comes when evidence, workflow, workforce, viable care models and the right partnerships come together.
Thank you to everyone who made the event such a productive one.

Onward — from pilot to practice.

Medical robots can now learn at industrial speed. Their evidence still moves at clinical speed. GPU-native simulation and generative world models are changing the economics of medical robotics. Robots can now experience thousands of failures in simulation before ever touching a patient. But faster simulation creates a harder question: How do we know the synthetic experience is trustworthy enough to influence a real engineering, regulatory or clinical decision?

I explore why the next bottleneck may no longer be simulation throughput, but decision-grade credibility — and why the most valuable simulator may not be the most realistic one, but the one that reliably preserves the right decision when we return to the physical world. A credible simulator does not make reality optional. It makes every scarce encounter with reality worth more. My latest article: “Medical Robots Can Now Learn at Industrial Speed. Their Evidence Still Moves at Clinical Speed.”

Three very full and rewarding days at REHACARE Asia / Medical Fair Asia 2026 — and a good moment to pause and say thank you.

The MotusAcademy × REHACARE Asia Leadership Forum – “From Pilot to Practice: Closing Asia’s Rehabilitation Technology Adoption Gap” was a real highlight. My sincere thanks to the organising team for making it possible, and especially to our invited speakers Adj A/Prof Loh Yong Joo, Prof Tan Boon Yeow, Dr Hsiao-ju (Rita) Cheng and Ms Goh Shi Min for bringing such thoughtful and practical perspectives to the discussion.

It was also meaningful to witness the MOU signing between St Luke’s Hospital and Robotimize — a concrete example of healthcare and industry working together to move rehabilitation robotics and technology from promising pilots towards real-world implementation.

Beyond the forum, the three days were packed with back-to-back meetings. I reconnected with many old friends, met many new ones, reviewed some interesting technologies and explored a number of potential collaborations. I was especially touched by friends and colleagues who travelled in and made time to catch up during the event.

A tiring few days, certainly — but also exceptionally fruitful.

The conversations reinforced something I strongly believe: the future of rehabilitation technology will not be determined by technology alone. It will depend on clinical value, evidence, workflow integration, sustainable implementation and the partnerships needed to make adoption happen.

Thank you to everyone who contributed, participated, connected and supported us.

Regulatory clearance is no longer the finish line for rehabilitation robotics. In many ways, it is where the harder work begins.

The real test is whether a company can prove, deploy, support, update, reimburse and remain accountable for its technology throughout its lifecycle.

In my latest ZenSightful Bytes, I explore why tougher regulation may ultimately strengthen rehabilitation robotics — by forcing the industry to move beyond impressive machines and build credible evidence systems around them.

The winners will not simply be the companies that make the best robots. They will be the ones that can prove why they matter in real care.

Final call to join us this 9 September at the MotusAcademy × RehaCare Asia Leadership Forum:
From Pilot to Practice: Closing Asia’s Rehabilitation Technology Adoption Gap

We will be looking beyond the demo and the pilot to ask the harder questions that actually determine adoption:
+What makes hospitals adopt?
+What counts as meaningful evidence?
+What creates real value beyond the clinic?
+What should we stop piloting — and what is ready to scale?

I’m delighted to be joined by Adj A/Prof Loh Yong Joo, Prof Tan Boon Yeow, Dr Hsiao-ju (Rita) Cheng, and Ms Goh Shi Min for what I expect will be a practical and candid discussion.

If you are working in rehabilitation, MedTech, healthcare innovation, hospital leadership, community care or healthy ageing, I hope you can join us.

08/09/2026

More patients do not automatically create more robot sales. A hospital buys another system only when utilisation, clinical value and productivity justify the capital. So the real market is closer to:
eligible care sites × justified systems per site × price × replacement rate—not patients × device price. The strongest proof of product-market fit is not the first installation. It is the second and third purchase from operating budgets. Clinical need creates relevance. Utilisation creates economics. Repeat purchasing creates the market.https://zenkoh.substack.com/p/the-patient-is-not-the-market
