For Daria, research wasn’t something she had access to back home. With limited resources, she knew she needed to look beyond her country to gain the experience she wanted.

Want to become faculty after your clinical fellowship? Focus on these 4 things.

Being clinically excellent is essential—but it’s not enough.

1. Build strong relationships with leadership.
Be professional, available, and someone people genuinely want to work with.

2. Publish.
Research productivity is expected, even if you want to pursue a career focused primarily on teaching.

3. Become known for one area.
Choose a niche and build your expertise until people think of you when they need someone in that field.

4. Become indispensable.
Teach, conduct research, present Grand Rounds, and contribute to challenging cases.

Build your reputation before you need the position.

When you become a recognized expert, they may not even wait for you to apply.

This is how it all started!

When we moved to Boston in 2020 for my cardiac imaging fellowship, money was tight living on just a fellow income.

Rent for a small one bedroom apartment in Boston, near Brigham, was more than 50% of our income. There was no other choice.

And so the tiny living room became the studio for ECG Academy and the Meta-Analysis Academy. It was also the dining room, the room to study, and the guest room for our parents when they visited.

Since then, the ECG Academy has had more than 11,000 students globally. The Meta-Analysis Academy has countless publications of alumni in the best journals in all specialties - JAMA Pediatrics, JAMA Cardiology, JAMA Surgery, Lancet Global Health, JPRAS, European Urology, European Radiology, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Anesthesia & Analgesia, and so much more.

It’s been almost 7 years of this incredible journey. And I am deeply grateful to God and to all the friends, collaborators and students who made this dream possible!

Somehow, we ended up turning our Stories into a little game: you name a specialty, and I find a publication from one of our students.

We could honestly do this all day, there are simply so many. Our students have published more than 2,000 papers across a wide range of specialties.

And today is the last day to join Meta-Analysis Academy. There is still time to change the course of your research journey this year. By next year, you could be presenting at major international conferences and have your first first-author publication - much sooner than you may think.

Diabetes is often framed around glucose, but its treatment may have consequences far beyond blood sugar.

In a network meta-analysis of 7.1 million patients across 46 studies, researchers found that the class of glucose-lowering drug may also influence the risk of cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver-related death.

🔬 TZDs ranked best for hepatocellular carcinoma
🧬 GLP-1 RAs for hepatic decompensation
🫀 SGLT2 inhibitors for cirrhosis and liver-related mortality

Led by Brazilian medical student Pedro Robson Costa Passos and Oxford researcher Rodrigo Motta, the study was published in Diabetes Care (IF 22.6).

“Choose something that matters to you, and focus on it.”

That was one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received in my academic career.

During my year as Chief Resident, I realized how easy it is to get consumed by administrative tasks, emails, schedules, and other demands that seem urgent—but are actually secondary.

So, what really matters?

Choose a mission, and stay focused on it.

For me, that mission was medical education. That focus ended up shaping my career, and it continues to be present in everything I do today.

And I think this advice applies to any stage of your career: a paper that matters, an exam, a rotation, a research project, or anything else that is truly important to you.

Don’t let what’s urgent take you away from what’s important.
