Today is Trans Day of Visibility…Here is a love letter I wrote for my Trans & Nom-binary sibilings last year.
-
Today is Trans Day of Visibility.
What does it mean to have a day dedicated to Trans Visibility?
What is visibility? To be seen?
By whom?
By the strangers we pass on the street?
By our neighbors, our grocery clerks, our children’s caretakers?
By our doctors, our coworkers, our online communities?
By the people we love?
Do we seek to be seen by our peers? Our families? Our parents? Our siblings?
Do we seek to be seen by our past selves, our child selves, the versions of us that never had the language to say who we are?
Not to be seen in the way that demands attention, but to be seen with a deeper knowing—the kind that understands our complexities. To be seen in our hearts, in our actions, in the change we are making in a world built on duality. A world built on oppression, on the cruelty of the power-hungry. A world shaped by colonizers who sought to control us.
But they never could.
We have always existed beyond their power.
We have always existed beyond the stories told about us.
And we are here—now—visible, breaking through the invisible, forever.
We are the embodiment of nature itself. Change.
As Octavia E. Butler reminds us:
“All that you touch, you change.
All that you change, changes you.
The only lasting truth is change.
God is change.”
We are the eternal truth that is change. No one can stop nature, and we are the embodiment of all that is—change and nature, evolving and infinite.
So my beautiful, tender trans and nonbinary siblings, as we gather here today, let us remember our power. Let us remember the importance of our existence. You are divine. We are here to shatter the limited eyes that cannot see beyond duality. Together, we are unstoppable.
I love you. I cherish the ground you walk on.
Your life has meaning. Your being is divine.
