LOWER BACK PAIN ON YOUR RUN?
DON'T JUST RUN THROUGH IT.
You set off feeling great.
A few kilometres in, you notice a little twinge in your lower back.
Nothing dramatic. You shorten your stride, ease off a little and carry on.
But later that evening — or the following morning — certain movements suddenly remind you that something isn't quite right.
So what should you do?
First, pain doesn't automatically mean you've seriously damaged something. But it's also information worth listening to.
Lower-back pain during or after running can have many possible contributors. The area where you feel the discomfort may not tell us the whole story.
Your hips, pelvis, glutes, hamstrings, hip flexors, spinal mobility, running load, previous injuries and even a recent change in training can all be part of the picture.
That's why simply stretching the sore bit — or repeatedly trying to "run it off" — isn't always the answer.
A useful assessment asks:
What changed?
What movements provoke it?
What movements don't?
How are the surrounding joints and tissues moving and loading?
And what does your body need to get comfortably moving again?
If something starts hurting during a run, easing off rather than pushing harder is usually a sensible first response.
And if the discomfort persists, worsens, keeps returning or is affecting your normal movement, it's worth getting it assessed rather than guessing which muscle needs stretching.
Pain tells you where something hurts.
A good assessment helps investigate why.
At Costa Med Osteopaths, we look beyond the sore spot to understand the bigger movement picture — so we can help you get better and get moving again.
