“If housing is a problem for Europeans, it needs to be a question for Europe.”

🇪🇺 Today’s discussions at the European Urban Initiative and URBACT EU City Lab on addressed the next steps for the European Affordable Housing Plan, the role of cities and regions as key delivery actors, and the regulatory frameworks that can enable public authorities to act.

🔍 A closer look at Brussels provided practical insights into rent regulation, vacant properties and public management rights, along with lessons that could be transferred to other European cities.

🏗️ Participants also exchanged experiences on renovation, adaptive reuse and urban transformation as pathways to more affordable and sustainable housing, before continuing the exchange through city visits across Brussels.

Tomorrow, the focus will turn to scaling and transferring innovative housing solutions, regulating short-term rentals and market pressures, and financing affordable housing with long-term social outcomes in mind.

The EUI Forward-Looking Survey 2026 is now available on Portico. Cities and other stakeholders across Europe told us about their priorities, challenges, knowledge gaps and support needs in sustainable urban development, and the findings are compared with the 2024 edition.
