The village 10k went past my garden on Saturday, and I genuinely don’t know whether to be horrified at myself for sticking with the classic “Oh I could never do a 10k”……or proud of myself for being confident enough to just be me and not sign up for something I truly didn’t want to do.

I’d already done my own wee run earlier (all by my lonesome), because running with actual humans, gives me the fear. So instead I stood in my garden with my coffee, clapping and cheering everyone on like a supportive wee goblin who knows her limits.

And the runners were incredible. Every single one of them. Different paces, different styles, but all absolutely smashing it. It was really inspiring to watch.

And this is exactly the kind of thing I see in hypnotherapy all the time — that moment where you’re not sure if you’re avoiding something because you’re scared… or because you simply don’t want it.

Confidence isn’t always about doing the big scary thing. Sometimes it’s about knowing yourself well enough to say, “That’s not for me,” without guilt, shame, or the imaginary Greek chorus of critics in your head.

So today I’m choosing proud‑horrified, horrified‑proud, and absolutely committed to my tradition of enthusiastic lurking.

Maybe next year I’ll join in. Or maybe I’ll keep helping other people feel brave while perfecting my waving technique. Both are valid life choices (although one involves less puffing & panting).

Do you ever catch yourself thinking that the ship has sailed ? That the version of you who was going to start that thing, change that habit, or finally follow that idea somehow missed their window?

I’m in my mid‑50s now (still not entirely sure how that happened), and I’ve only recently realise it’s never too late. If I try something new and hate it, I can stop. If I’m absolutely rubbish at it but enjoy myself, that’s perfectly fine. There’s a real freedom in letting it be that simple.

Your subconscious doesn’t run on deadlines. It doesn’t care how long something has lived on the “maybe one day” list. It’s still holding every version of you you’ve ever wanted to grow into, just patiently, waiting for permission.

Hypnotherapy isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about clearing the static so the you that’s been there all along can finally come forward.

So if you dropped the idea that it’s too late, what’s one thing you’d let yourself try again, release, or change?

So I found this picture online of last weeks eclipse. Because from here the eclipse last week was basically clouds starring clouds, featuring some more clouds. We didn’t see a thing, but we still sat outside and felt that little temperature drop, just knowing something magical was happening even if we didn’t get to see it.

Some people got the full show. Some of us got not much more than a feeling something was going on. It’s just the luck of the draw.

Hypnosis is similar — you don’t always get fireworks. Sometimes the change is quiet, cosy, and happening behind the scenes. But it’s still happening.

I had a bit of a clear‑out recently. The full works — wardrobe, drawers, and that one cupboard you only open if you’re feeling brave because everything falls out like it’s trying to escape. I’d told myself I’d be very organised and list it all on Vinted.

But weeks later it was still sitting there. Stuff just loitering, waiting to be photographed and posted. Meanwhile I was tripping over it all, feeling guilty, disorganised, and haunted by my bad purchasing decisions every time I walked past. A big black cloud made of fabric.

So last week I stopped waiting for the mythical perfect moment. I bagged it up, put it in the boot of the car, drove it to the charity shop, and handed it over to the very grateful, lovely lady behind the counter. No photos, no listings, no faff. Just gone.

And instantly I felt lighter.

And I realised I do the same thing with mental clutter. I tell myself I’ll deal with it eventually, sort through it when life calms down, when I’ve got time. Meanwhile I’m tripping over the same old thoughts, habits, and stories every single day.

Sometimes the answer isn’t a perfect plan or a colour‑coded strategy. Sometimes it’s simply deciding you’re done carrying it, and clearing it out. Just letting it go.

If there’s clutter in your head that’s long overdue being released, you know where I am.

I got such a lovely message this week from a client who wasn’t sure what to expect when they came along to their session.

Being nervous before your first session is completely normal — most of my clients feel it. But “nervous” and “not going” are two very different things, and I’m always so glad when someone takes the leap anyway.

This is exactly why I love what I do. When food stops being a battle and starts feeling manageable, even good.

If your relationship with food has felt heavy for a while, know that shifts like this are possible. Sessions are online, relaxed, and there’s no judgement — just a chat about what’s going on and how I can help.

A couple of weeks ago I had the loveliest Sunday afternoon at the panto. Sunshine, great company, funny panto and all was well. I parked in a lovely wee space not even thinking about the parking because it was Sunday and surely it’ll be free. Because everywhere near where I was, Sunday parking is free. Just… not where I’d actually parked.

Cue the dreaded sticky pouch on the windscreen. No memory of seeing a sign, although to be honest I probably wasn’t looking — my brain had already decided I didn’t need to. I appealed, feeling very hard done by… but appeals take up to 20 days, and if you don’t pay within 14, the fine doubles. So I paid it, grumbling the whole way.

Here’s what hit me afterwards: I didn’t check the sign because my subconscious had already filled in the answer. It ran on a pattern — “Sunday = free parking” — built from past experience. And I acted on it automatically. That’s exactly how the subconscious works day to day. It loves shortcuts. Most of the time they’re helpful. But every so often, one of those automatic assumptions costs us — a fine, a habit we didn’t choose, a reaction that isn’t really ours.

The good news? Just like I can (and definitely will!) read the signs next time, we can retrain the assumptions running quietly in the background — the ones around confidence, anxiety, habits, cravings — with the right support.

So if you fancy a chat about retraining any patterns that aren’t serving you you can book a free, no obligation, 15 minute call here - https://www.kwhypnotherapy.co.uk/

Do you ever convince yourself you can manage perfectly well on your own? That you don’t need support because you’ve got everything handled and can just power through?

That was me last week, deciding barefoot shoes were exactly what I needed. Who needs cushioning and support? Not me!

I had this lovely vision of becoming one of those minimalist, nature-connected people, gliding around effortlessly in my zero-drop shoes. What I hadn’t quite thought through was that my feet actually need support.

This was not the wellness hack I’d imagined and instead, I’ve spent a week hobbling about with an instep that feels like I’ve been enthusiastically stepping on Lego.

So I’m back in my very supportive shoes, being very kind to my poor feet while they recover.

It got me thinking about something I see frequently. We often make big, dramatic changes because they sound like the “right” thing to do, without asking whether our mind or body is actually ready. We tell ourselves we should just cope, push through, do it all alone.

But support isn’t weakness. It’s what gives us the stability to grow safely.

Whether it’s footwear, boundaries, confidence, or anxiety — stripping away all the support at once just leaves us wobbly, sore, and overwhelmed.

Real, lasting change comes from gentle steps, strong foundations, and actually listening to what your mind and body are telling you. So this week I’m all for support. Supportive shoes and supportive habits.

Ever wondered why you keep doing the things you’ve decided you shouldn’t?

It’s one of the questions I hear most often in hypnotherapy — from people who make the same decision over and over, and still end up frustrated. They decide to be healthier, happier, or to let something go… and their subconscious mind just won’t play along.

You make a clear decision — I’m not eating rubbish anymore. I’m cutting back. I’m stopping that habit. And yet the behaviour creeps back in. Sometimes quickly. Sometimes quietly. But it always seems to come back.

That’s because your subconscious is running the pattern, not your conscious intention. It stores your habits, stress responses, emotional triggers, and coping mechanisms — even the ones you don’t actually want.

When you work with the subconscious instead of fighting it, change stops feeling like a battle of wills. It gets easier, calmer, more natural.

If you’re curious to know how this works you can send me a message, or book a free, no-obligation 15-minute call to chat things through https://app.simplymeet.me/karenwilsonhypnotherapy

Not sure how I managed it but recently on YouTube I came across Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs on the Grammys stage singing Fast Car. A song written decades ago that has aged so beautifully (as has the rest of the album in my opinion).

But it wasn’t just Tracy’s voice (even though it’s still just beautiful). And it wasn’t the strangeness of seeing this song reborn through two completely different artists and two completely different genres.

It was seeing Taylor Swift in the audience. Standing up on her own. Singing every single word. Completely and utterly fan‑girling over Tracy Chapman like a teenager at her first concert. No cool. No composure. Just pure, unfiltered joy and admiration — right there on her face for the whole world to see. And I was struck by how beautiful it was.

Because how many of us would have stayed in our seats if everyone else was? Glancing sideways. Keeping it together. Deciding that cool was more important than real in that moment.

I know I do it and I’m not alone. We spot someone who changed us, someone whose work shaped who we became and instead of saying it, we smile politely and move on. We don’t want to seem too much or too keen or too vulnerable or too impressed.

So we shrink it and we swallow it. We perform indifference instead, thinking that’s cool.

But what if we didn’t?
What if we told people they mattered?
What if we told them their work left a mark?
What if we let ourselves feel joy without worrying how it looks?

This is exactly the kind of shift I see in hypnotherapy — people letting go of the old patterns that keep them small, quiet, “cool,” and stepping into something far more powerful. You deserve to take up space. Fully. Joyfully. Taylor-Swift-at-the-Grammys style.

For those of you who are curious, I help people who feel anxious, overwhelmed, stuck in old habits, or disconnected from themselves, finally breathe again.

Most of the people who come to me are carrying too much — too many thoughts, too many responsibilities, too many “shoulds”. Some are trying to break patterns they’ve been battling for years. Others want to release excess weight that feels tied to stress, emotion, or old stories they’re ready to let go of.

So I help to quiet the noise, reset the mind, and create space for change that actually lasts.

Whether you want to:
• Feel calmer and more in control
• Reduce anxiety and overwhelm
• Break unhelpful habits
• Rebuild confidence
• Shift your relationship with food and your body

I guide you toward the version of you that feels lighter, clearer, and more grounded.

If you’re ready to feel different — not just think about it — I offer a free, no obligation, 15‑minute discovery call so you can see if working together feels right. https://app.simplymeet.me/karenwilsonhypnotherapy
