I was telling everyone in class yesterday, the perfect technique is a balance between what the teachers says and what you do instinctively 🧐 (if the teacher knows what they are doing that is 🫣)
👇🏽
And remember, it’s yoga experiment, not yoga practise. At least in my philosophy. Chose the version that is best for you body. And if you don’t know what that is… 😵‍💫🤷🏾‍♂️, keep experimenting 👊🏾🫵🏽✨

Teacher training assessment day not too long away. I always say, if you fail you should kick off 🤬😡

Because there is no reason to fail. You should be so ready that you won’t fail. I’ve been ready to fight my assessors in the past 😤😀 That’s how prepared I feel. And I need to be as I don’t have the academic advantages as so many others. So I make up for this in effort. Be so ready and prepared for your assessment that failing isn’t even an option 🫶🏽👊🏾✨

At some point, we stop trying so hard to become someone and make peace with who we already are 🫶🏽

When that happens organically, it’s less enlightenment, more a personal RELEVATION. (That’s the correct spelling. Watch The Good Dinosaur 🦕)
👇🏽
Taoism calls it wu wei. Not doing nothing, but living without forcing. Zen points to something similar. The less attached we become to the person we think we should be, the more freely we can inhabit the person we actually are 🧐☀️

I still want to learn, grow and do Laura’s class. I just don’t need to get better at those things to prove who I am anymore. I’m happy with where I am ✨
Seeking peace and finding it are two completely different things. I’m not even sure peace is something you can find. One day it sort of just creeps up you.
A relevation ✨🫶🏽🦕

PART 2 🫶🏽🫵🏽🙏🏾
I think my videos are less about education and more about conversation. It’s about being open to possibilities outside the rigid RULES. It’s the same in anatomy as it is in philosophy 🧐😵‍💫😤. Food for thought 💭

There are as always too many nuances that can’t be covered in a short reel 🙏🏾
Essentially, we try to keep the knee over the ankle as it’s the most optimal alignment. However, having the knee forward isn’t WRONG.

One of the most common cues in Warrior II is to “square the hips” 👀🧐😵‍💫 - at least what I’m told 🫵🏽🤷🏾‍♂️

The problem is that bodies don’t all work the same way. As you know.

If turning your pelvis “out” causes your front knee to drift inwards, or creates discomfort around your SI joint, then that position probably isn’t right for you.

I don’t spend much time trying to move the pelvis at all to be honest. If the feet 👣 are set up well and the front knee is stable, the pelvis usually finds the position that’s right for that person’s anatomy.

👉🏽 The funny thing is that beginners NEVER need this type of cue. They tend to move naturally. It’s often those of us who’ve practised for years, and have collected lots of alignment “rules” from along the way, who have to unlearn them 😵‍💫.

There’s a lot more nuance to this than an instagram reel allows 😵‍💫👀
When I say you don’t need to squeeze your glutes in Wheel, I don’t mean your glutes are switched off. If you’re pushing properly into the floor, they’re usually contributing already. My point is that many people don’t need to consciously add an extra squeeze because the movement itself recruits them.
👇🏽
Likewise, in Locust, I’m not saying squeezing your glutes is the only way to do the pose. I’m saying that for many people it helps share the work between the hips and the lower back, rather than asking the lumbar spine to do quite so much 😤🤢
As always, frustrating as it is, anatomy, strength, mobility and movement strategies vary. There isn’t one cue that works for everyone, which is exactly why I’m such a fan of treating yoga as an experiment rather than following blanket rules 🙏🏾👳🏾

Try it both ways. Pay attention to what your body tells you. That’s usually more useful than arguing in the comments about who’s “right”.

Teaching wasn’t always easy for me. I was, and still am to some degree, pretty shy 😵‍💫🫣. But I soon learnt that I didn’t need to “teach” per se. What I needed to do was just share my passion for what I do, and the teaching would take care of itself 🙏🏾

I’ve always gone against conventional methods, not to be an intentional rebel, but because I never felt like I fitted in. I wasn’t, and still am not, a typical yoga teacher. So I don’t try to be one.

The reason teaching is so easy now is because before each class I remind myself that my job isn’t to instruct and command, but to be the guy who helps his students see the best in themselves. That’s all teaching is 🫶🏽🙏🏾

How can people buy into you if you can’t buy into yourself first? That’s the first lesson of becoming a yoga teacher. Just be yourself. If you try too hard, you’ll end up a poor imitation of someone else 😵‍💫

Just think about becoming the teacher that you need.
It is that easy 🙏🏾
