GROUNDING š£
Sometimes, when weāre in a state of activation, we forget all the tools we have available to help us feel grounded, safe, and regulated again.
When our sympathetic nervous system is activated (our fight-or-flight response), it can begin to affect our sleep, eating habits, and digestion.
Our digestive system is in constant communication with our nervous system through the vagus nerve, so before we know it, weāre caught in a vicious cycle of stress feeding more stress.
Iāve been feeling pretty dysregulated this past week, and this morning I felt the need to ground myself.
After just five minutes of walking barefoot in nature, I noticed I started yawning frequently.
Then it clicked.
Grounding is such a powerful way to help bring the body back into homeostasis, back into balance.
Yawning is often a sign that the parasympathetic nervous system (our rest-and-digest response) is becoming more active; Itās the bodyās way of saying, āYouāre safe now. You can slow down. You can rest.ā
Just five minutes of your time can help your body reconnect with a sense of balance, safety, and calm.
Even though I spend so much time learning about and teaching nervous system regulation, Iām still amazed by how quickly and powerfully these simple practices can shift the way we feel.
Some of the benefits of grounding:
šæ Helps calm the nervous system
šæ Reduces stress and anxiety
šæ Supports better sleep
šæ Encourages parasympathetic activation
šæ May improve mood and emotional regulation
šæ Helps reduce muscle tension
šæ Supports a greater sense of presence and connection
šæ Can promote feelings of safety and inner calm
