Strength and hypertrophy training aren’t completely different.

For strength, you’re trying to maximise force and performance with heavier loads.

For hypertrophy, you’re trying to create a strong growth stimulus while managing fatigue and accumulating enough quality work.

That’s why your rep ranges, rest periods and overall programming should reflect the goal.

Same exercises. Different intent.

The exercises might be the same, but the goal changes how it should be programmed.

Strength requires heavier loads, lower reps and enough rest to maintain output. Hypertrophy requires enough controlled, productive volume through the target muscle.

Training is important, but getting in your best shape requires control over your nutrition and meal prep is one of the easiest ways to create that control.

It removes guessing when you’re hungry, helps you manage your calories and protein, and means you’re not relying on willpower when you’re busy.

You don’t need to eat perfectly. You need to make consistently good decisions, and preparing your food in advance makes that much easier.

Is the exercise no longer working or are you simply not training it correctly?

Adding more weight can look like progress or it can simply mean loading more weight through a shorter range because you haven’t properly learned the movement.

You might rush the heavier weight, reducing your control and the overall tension placed through the target muscle.

If stability disappears as well, other areas of the body begin helping to complete the repetition.

Despite lifting more weight, the muscle you’re trying to train may actually be doing less work.

Before changing the exercise, film your sets and keep your setup, range of motion and ex*****on consistent.

Then you can trust the numbers and know whether you’re actually progressing.

A personal best is easy to measure, but the work that creates it is usually less obvious.

In this case, the biggest improvement was not effort. It was making the setup and movement more efficient.

Once the position achieved its optimum, we could assess performance properly, choose the right load and build confidence under it.

Very pleased with this one.

Progressive overload is often simplified to adding more weight, but the load only tells part of the story.

For a comparison to be useful, the movement needs to remain reasonably consistent: similar range, control, setup and intent.

If the weight increases while the range becomes shorter or the position changes significantly, it may not represent the adaptation you intended to create.

Establish the movement first. Record what you did. Then progress a variable without losing the qualities that made the exercise useful in the first place.

The logbook provides the numbers. Good coaching gives those numbers context.
