A black spot on the sole of your foot is often caused by something harmless, such as bruising, pressure or a verruca.
But what if it does not disappear?
Acral melanoma is a rare form of skin cancer that can develop on the sole, between the toes or beneath a toenail. It can sometimes be mistaken for a corn, callus, verruca, fungal nail infection or old injury.
Warning signs include:
* A new or changing dark spot
* An irregular mark containing several colours
* A black line in one toenail that becomes wider
* Pigment spreading onto the skin around the nail
* Unexplained nail splitting or destruction
* A lesion that bleeds or does not heal
Most dark marks are not melanoma, but an unexplained or changing lesion should not be ignored.
