TRANSCRIPTION ERRORS

It can be very frustrating when you are sure a person should be in the online records you are searching but you just cannot find them!

The cost of subscribing to the main genealogy sites can be off-putting and prohibitive but even though they all seem to have the same basic data, the quality of transcription can vary greatly. You may find, for instance, a name not shown on one site can be found on another. Different sites also offer different search options which can be helpful.

If purchasing more than one subscription cannot be justified, why not see what your local archive or library subscribes to and subscribe to another?

What does 'Topshop' mean? 🧵

Thousands of households were involved in England's 'cottage industry' in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Many people used their homes for the production of domestic textiles.

Hillfields in Coventry rapidly expanded in the 19th century, with many residents working from home and earning a living from weaving silk ribbons.

Numerous top floors of houses were used as workshops, also known as 'topshops', and were filled with looms and materials.

The distinctive windows of this 'topshop' were designed to allow maximum light into the space.

📷 This photograph was taken on Queen Street in Coventry in 1953. The houses were demolished in the 1970s.
