It’s completely normal to feel a bit anxious if your GP mentions a colonoscopy. The good news is that it’s a safe and routine test, and one of the best ways to properly understand what might be causing your symptoms. Most of the time, it’s simply about getting clear answers and reassurance.

Your GP or specialist might recommend a colonoscopy if you’ve experienced things like:

🔵 A change in your bowel habit that hasn’t settled after a few weeks
🔵 Unexplained weight loss
🔵 Ongoing abdominal discomfort or bloating
🔵 Blood in your stool

These symptoms are often linked to common conditions; such as haemorrhoids or IBS - but it’s still important to have them checked properly, in line with national guidance.

A colonoscopy allows specialists to look directly at the bowel and, if needed, take small samples. For many people, it provides reassurance; for others, it helps identify problems early so they can be treated promptly.
