Automotive Techdays kicks off in the Netherlands.

2 days of diagnostic geekery. Top agenda, top presenters, top subject matter.

Wish you here?

Check it out for 2027, check the comments.

DiagnoseDan is currently delivering the opening Keynote.

You can class us as certified petrol heads and here's the evidence to prove it.

But change is the only constant, especially in an industry like ours.

The top techs know we need to change our perspective on EVs vs internal combustion engines.

ICEs are incredible pieces of engineering but they're very complicated and inefficient.

🔥 65% thermal energy is wasted as heat vs the 5% with the electric motor
⚙️200+ reciprocating parts in a power train vs 20 in an EV

The numbers show that EV technology is fully optimised .

The questions is: are you judging the new power train with an old map?

Are you against EV or anti-feeling like a beginner?

Would you believe it?

A lot of techs are taught to diagnose electrical faults by reading the resistance. Whilst resistance has its place, in the real world most electrical faults aren't open circuit.

So the question shouldn't be what does it measure on the bench. It should be can it carry current when the system is working.

That's why the test light and multimeter are so useful.

The test light doesn't just measure, it loads the circuit. The multimeter doesn't just tell you 12 volts exist, it tells you where it's being lost.

Where do you see the worst hidden voltage drops?

Most comebacks come from one thing: guessing...

The oscilloscope isn't a more advanced diagnostic tool, it's a way to prove what's happening before committing to parts and labour.

A scan tool shows you what the car's unhappy with, the scope shows you what's happening.

You'll spend less on parts, have faster fixes and fewer comebacks.

The scope pays for itself the first time it saves you from guessing.

What's your biggest profit leak right now?

Business owners - what's your biggest asset?

It's most likely your senior technician.

When a garage invests in their staff, the technicians return to work sharper and more capable. But beyond the knowledge, they're more motivated, more confident and gain a quiet authority.

Over time, they become a bigger presence, more adept at conversing with customers, patient and willing to share advice with more junior staff. You'll see the standard of the whole workshop start to lift.

The technician gets the qualification and recognition they deserve, the business gets a Master Technician and the credibility that comes with it.

It's the smartest investment you'll ever make.

Are you pricing your ADAS calibrations right?

Calibration isn't about plugging in a tool, it's about the correction and conditions the vehicle is under.

The garage has to decide carefully whether they can support investment in a calibration rig or would be better off outsourcing it. Calibrations are more than just the expense; they can also be dangerous and a liability.

However you handle them, you still have to price it right.

Last week we said farewell to our latest Master Technician and Diagnostic Technician graduates!

Over the past year and a half we've witnessed impressive hard work, determination and personal development from every one of these awesome techs.

Now, we get to see them walk out of here not only qualified but as confident and forward-thinking technicians.

The work you’ve put in has been huge — and the growth has been obvious. It's been a privilege to share this journey with you.

Congratulations! You've earned this!

Someone asked a while ago, how do you know which cylinder is down after doing the relative compression test.

Rather than finding out which cylinder it is, finding out where the air is going is far more useful.

The bleak option - top end leak. Valves, heads, gaskets. Not great but fixable.

The bloody bleak option - bottom end leak. Rings, bores and pistons. We're talking big big money 🫠

Your testing combination can single-handedly prevent unnecessary strip-downs.

What's stopping you from analysing pressure pulses in your diagnostic process?

Does the whole team dread getting AdBlue jobs?

Are they your main source of comebacks?

If you don't know what AdBlue faults look like or if you don't have a reference for what's normal, these jobs can be so brutal.

AdBlue & NOx punishes guesswork, which means you need a strategy and decision making process.

Turn your dread into a profitable, repeatable process with the AdBlue training course.

An awesome and well-spent few days at the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event.

A quick roundup from an event packed with brilliant conversations and big moments.

James joined ALLDATA for a panel on driving sustainable growth in the workshop and delivered a session on SERMI in the UK and what it means for independent garages.

And a huge personal highlight: Olivia was named a 30 Under 30 winner for outstanding talent and contribution to the automotive industry.

What a fantastic turn-out - thanks to all those who stopped by to say hi and for all the chats with the people we know and love in the industry.

See you next year!
