🚰 Obsessed with hitting your 8 glasses of water every single day? 💧

Hydration is essential for life, but the rigid "8x8 rule" might not be as scientific as you think! ⬇️

❌ MYTH: Everyone must drink exactly 8 glasses (2 liters) of plain water daily.
✅ FACT: Hydration needs vary significantly based on body mass, climate, activity levels, and dietary intake. Water from food, tea, coffee, and fruit all counts toward your daily fluid total!

🧠 The Clinical Science (Anatomy & Physiology):

🔹 Renal Homeostasis & Osmoregulation: Your body regulates fluid balance through the hypothalamic-pituitary-renal axis. When blood plasma osmolality rises (meaning fluid levels drop slightly), specialized osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus trigger the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) from the posterior pituitary gland.

🔹 Nephron Water Reabsorption: ADH acts on the collecting ducts of your kidney nephrons, inserting aquaporin channels to reabsorb water back into the bloodstream and concentrating your urine. This system naturally maintains fluid balance without rigid volume rules.

🔹 Total Dietary Intake: Up to 20–30% of your daily water intake naturally comes from solid foods (fruits, vegetables, proteins) alongside other beverages. Relying on thirst mechanisms and monitoring urine color (aiming for pale straw-colored) are far more accurate indicators of hydration than counting glasses.

💬 How much water do you drink a day? Are you carrying a giant water bottle everywhere? 👇

Did you know that some common skin lumps and lesions can be assessed and treated within a GP minor surgery service?

At MK18, we provide a minor surgery service for suitable lesions, which may include epidermal cysts, lipomas, skin tags and other benign lesions.

🔎 What happens first?

Every patient starts with a minor surgery assessment. This allows the clinician to examine the lesion, discuss your concerns and determine whether it is appropriate and safe to treat within our service.

If treatment is suitable, we’ll explain the procedure, including what to expect before, during and after treatment. If you’re happy to proceed, you’ll then be added to our minor surgery list.

🧪 Why might a lesion be sent for histology?

When appropriate, tissue removed during minor surgery may be sent to a laboratory for histological examination. This involves examining the tissue under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis and make sure the clinical findings match what is seen in the tissue.

💡 CLINICAL FACT

An epidermal cyst and a lipoma can both appear as a lump beneath the skin, but they are very different conditions. An epidermal cyst is usually filled with keratin, while a lipoma is made up of fatty tissue. This is one reason why proper clinical assessment is important before deciding on treatment.

💚 Our approach is simple: assess first, explain clearly, treat appropriately.

If you have a lump, cyst, skin tag or other lesion you would like to discuss, book a minor surgery assessment with our team.

Assessment: £95

Please note that not every lesion will be suitable for treatment within a GP minor surgery service. Suitability is determined following clinical assessment, and some lesions may require referral for further investigation or treatment.

💥 Twisting your torso to get that satisfying spinal pop? 🦴

Many people pop their back for quick tension relief, but does it actually align your spine? Let's break down the science! ⬇️

❌ MYTH: Cracking your back "puts your spine back into place."
✅ FACT: The popping sound is just gas release within the facet joints. It does not realign vertebrae or fix structural spinal misalignment.

🧠 The Clinical Science (Anatomy & Physiology):

🔹 Facet Joint Cavitation: Your vertebrae connect to each other via posterior synovial joints called facet joints (zygapophyseal joints). Like your knuckles, these joints are surrounded by a capsule containing synovial fluid rich in dissolved gases.

🔹 The Mechanism of Relief: Twisting or extending the spine expands the joint space, causing rapid cavitation (gas bubble formation/collapse). This sudden stretch triggers local mechanoreceptors in the joint capsule, sending inhibitory signals to nearby spinal nerves that briefly relax surrounding paraspinal muscles.

🔹 Hyper-Mobility Risks: Self-cracking repeatedly forces already hyper-mobile joint segments to move, while leaving stiff, hypomobile segments unaffected. Over time, habitual self-cracking can over-stretch the capsular ligaments, leading to joint instability rather than true alignment.

Gut health is about more than smooth digestion—it's key to supporting your immunity, nutrient absorption, and overall energy. Small daily choices lay the foundation for a happier, healthier microbiome.

Ways to support gut health:

Start your morning with warm lemon water

Eat a fiber-rich, balanced diet

Stay consistently hydrated

Limit processed foods and refined sugars

Keep daily stress levels in check

Incorporate probiotic or fermented foods

Even a few mindful tweaks to your routine can help ease digestion and boost your vitality.

Fun Clinical Fact
🍋 Drinking warm water with lemon upon waking stimulates peristalsis and encourages gastrointestinal secretions, giving your natural digestive process a gentle jump-start.

💚 CLINICAL BREAKDOWN: What Is an Iron Infusion? 🩸✨

Feeling constantly exhausted, lightheaded, or short of breath despite getting enough sleep? It could be more than everyday fatigue—it might be iron deficiency anemia.
When oral iron tablets aren't enough or cause gut distress, an IV iron infusion offers a fast, effective solution! 🩺👇
🧪 What Goes Into an IV Iron Infusion?

An IV iron infusion delivers a specialised formulation directly into your bloodstream over 15–30 minutes:
• 🧲 Ferric Iron Core: Elemental iron needed for cellular function.
• 🛡️ Carbohydrate Shell: Encases the iron to prevent toxicity and allow controlled release.
• 💧 Sterile Saline: Safely carries the iron complex straight into your vein.

🧠 The Clinical Science (Anatomy & Physiology):

🔹 Hemoglobin & Oxygen Transport: Iron is the core component of hemoglobin in red blood cells. Without enough iron, your bone marrow can't make hemoglobin, leading to smaller, paler red blood cells that can't carry enough oxygen.

🔹 Bypasses the Gut: Oral iron relies on gut absorption, which can be impaired by inflammation, IBD, or Celiac disease. An IV infusion bypasses the GI tract entirely.

🔹 Replenishes Stores: Macrophages break down the iron complex so it can be built into new red blood cells or safely stored as ferritin in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.

💡 Why Are Iron Infusions Important?

✅ Restores oxygen capacity to relieve fatigue, brain fog, and breathlessness far faster than oral tablets.

✅ Keeps myoglobin and mitochondrial energy (ATP) production running smoothly.

✅ Quickly boosts low iron levels before surgery or late in pregnancy.

✅ Gentle on the Stomach: Avoids nausea and severe constipation.

💬 Struggling with unexplained fatigue? Speak to your GP about a full iron panel (including ferritin).

Save your money on expensive detox teas, juice cleanses, and body wraps! ☕ 🧃 💸Your body already has a super-advanced, built-in detox system that works 24/7 for free!
MYTH: Detox teas and juice cleanses are essential to clear out toxins.
✅ FACT: Your liver and kidneys already handle 100% of your body's natural detoxification. All they need to thrive is balanced nutrition, adequate hydration, and good sleep!
🧠 The Clinical Science (Anatomy & Physiology):
🔹 Hepatic Biotransformation (The Liver): Hepatocytes perform complex enzymatic reactions to neutralize toxins and waste:• Phase I (Functionalization): Cytochrome P450 ($CYP450$) enzymes oxidize, reduce, or hydrolyze toxic compounds to expose functional groups.• Phase II (Conjugation): Enzymes attach polar molecules (such as glucuronic acid or glutathione) to Phase I metabolites, making lipid-soluble waste water-soluble so it can be excreted safely.
🔹 Renal Excretion (The Kidneys): Millions of nephrons continually filter blood plasma:• Glomerular Filtration & Tubular Secretion: Filters metabolic waste (urea, uric acid, creatinine) out of the blood and into urine while reabsorbing vital electrolytes and water to maintain homeostasis.
🔹 The Reality of "Detox Products": Commercial detox teas often contain laxatives (like senna) or strong diuretics. They cause quick fluid loss and electrolyte depletion—giving a false illusion of "debloating" without performing true cellular detoxification!💧
Support your body's natural detox systems the right way: drink water, eat colorful whole foods, get 7–9 hours of sleep, and stay active!📌 Tag a friend who needs to stop wasting money on detox teas!

Stress is a natural response that helps us react to challenges, but when stress becomes chronic, it can affect both physical and mental health.

Long-term stress can contribute to:
• Elevated blood pressure
• Sleep disturbances
• Increased risk of anxiety and depression
• Reduced immune function
• Difficulty concentrating and making decisions

One simple way to lower stress is through controlled breathing. Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping your body shift from "fight or flight" into a calmer state.

✨ Try this:
Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 6 seconds. Repeat 5 times.

Fun Clinical Fact

🧠 Your brain cannot fully distinguish between a real threat and a vividly imagined stressful situation. That's why mindfulness and relaxation techniques can significantly reduce stress responses—even when the stressor is only anticipated.
