Behind every waiting list statistic is a person waiting to get on with their life 📅

We welcome efforts to reduce NHS waiting times and increase access to care, including plans to expand capacity through weekend appointments.

But creating more appointments is only part of the picture. For some people, getting to appointments can be a challenge.

Long journeys, limited public transport, reliance on non-emergency patient transport services, work commitments, childcare and caring responsibilities can all affect whether someone is able to attend when an appointment is offered.

We also know people need support while they wait for treatment. Clear information, access to advice and confidence in what happens next can make a huge difference to people's experience of care.

The proposed changes to follow-up appointments could free up capacity for those waiting to be seen, but any new approach must work for patients as well as for the NHS. Not everyone finds it easy to navigate healthcare services or know when they need further support. People need clear information, straightforward routes back into care and confidence that help will be available when they need it.

As these changes are introduced, we'll continue listening to people's experiences and ensuring their voices are heard in conversations about the future of NHS services in Wales.

Like many of the people affected, we first learned of the pause to gender-affirming surgery referrals when it was publicly announced.

Our focus now is on the people whose care has been disrupted and who are facing uncertainty about what happens next.

People deserve clear information, timely updates and reassurance about their future care. We're seeking urgent discussions with the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee and want to make sure the experiences of those affected are properly heard and taken into account.

💚 Everyone should be able to receive care in the language that feels right for them.

That's why we're proud to have signed a new Welsh Language Pledge with the Welsh Government as part of Mwy na geiriau.

The pledge commits us to working together to strengthen Welsh language provision across health and social care services in Wales, helping ensure people can access services in Welsh without needing to ask.

For many people, Welsh is the language they feel safest, most comfortable and most understood in, especially during some of the most important and vulnerable moments in their lives.

At Llais, we'll continue listening to Welsh-speaking people, sharing their experiences, highlighting good practice and helping drive improvements where they're needed most.

Together, we can help make Welsh a visible and valued part of health and social care across Wales.

Did you know? 💡

Feedback shared with Llais highlighted that people attending diabetic eye screening couldn't easily see all available screening venues online.

We've shared those experiences with Public Health Wales and improvements are now being planned to make location information clearer and easier to access.

The proposed changes will help people:

📢 Looking back on July at Llais

Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences of health and social care with us last month. Your voices continue to help shape services across Wales. ❤️

In July we:
- Heard from 1,708 people
- Supported 1,204 people through our advocacy service
- Held 67 events across Wales
- Worked with 82 partners
- Made 30 representations to NHS bodies and local authorities
- Were involved in 38 service changes to help improve services

We also continued to highlight important issues affecting communities, responded to concerns about emergency care pressures and local NHS engagement processes, signed a new Welsh language pledge, and called for action to improve access to Welsh language health and social care services.

The issues we heard about most often included waiting times, access to care, mental health support, communication, and the quality of care people receive.

Every story shared with us helps ensure people’s voices are heard and acted on. We’re already feeding these insights back to government, NHS and social care leaders to improve services across Wales.

💙 Impact in action

When a West Wales family couldn't get the information they needed to prepare for a loved one's return home from a specialist rehabilitation centre in England, they turned to Llais for support.

Months of unanswered questions had left them unsure what support would be available, including important information about tracheostomy care and adaptations needed at home.

Llais West Wales worked with the family to raise their concerns and seek answers from the health board.

As a result, communication issues were acknowledged and the family received the information they needed to help plan a safe discharge home.

After the case was resolved, the client shared this message with us:

"I would like to record my thanks to you for your persistent work to conclude this matter."

Every person deserves to feel informed, supported and heard when navigating health and social care services. Sometimes, one conversation can make a real difference.

💬 Turning insight into action

Last week, we shared our report highlighting the experiences of Welsh speakers using health and social care services across Wales.

People told us that being able to speak Welsh helped them feel understood, respected and involved in decisions about their care. Others described the challenges they faced when Welsh language services weren't available.

Today, we're pleased to share that Llais has signed a new Welsh Language Pledge with the Welsh Government as part of Mwy na geiriau.

The pledge sets out how we'll work together to strengthen Welsh language provision across health and social care, support the Active Offer, and ensure the experiences of Welsh speakers continue to inform improvement.

This is an important step forward, but it's also a reminder of why listening matters. The experiences shared in our recent report will help shape the work we do through this partnership.

Everyone should be able to receive care in the language that feels right for them.
