I often hear, “I can manage; people speak clearly enough.” But hearing isn’t just about words, people often forget about life and the world around them in general.

I was thinking about this today during a visit to a farm park with my son and mum.

It’s the creak of the gate opening to the farm, the rustle of leaves in the breeze, the clink of an owl’s talons on metal. It’s the sudden screech of macaws calling to each other, the happy snort of a piglet rooting in the straw, and the soft lap-lap-lap of a sheep taking food from your hand (and let’s not forget the giddy laughter of a 5 year old as it does so).

Hearing connects us not just to conversation, but to the world. To joy. To wonder. To the quiet, beautiful details that make a day unforgettable….heck, to the sound of crickets in the grass on one of our long hot summer days.

Let’s remember: a full life isn’t just about understanding speech. It’s about hearing every moment life.
