🌟 Meet the Team: Kate! 🌟

This week we’re shining the spotlight on Kate, one of our wonderful carers at Helping Hands Colchester.

✨ What made you become a carer?
“I’ve always done some sort of care job. After 26 years in a residential care home, I left because it closed. I then moved over to domiciliary care to fit around family life—and I just love going in to see our customers and being that person who has helped them to live at home.” 🤝💙

✨ What do you like about working for Helping Hands?
“Helping Hands are able to offer work around my family, and offer compassion and understanding to all of the staff. They help with all the ups and downs. The customers are lovely and to learn about their lives and memories is very inspiring.” 🌼📖

✨ What do you do in your free time?
“In my spare time I’m always doing something with the kids—being a dance mum! Travelling, a taxi driver and a proud mum to two girls.” 💃🚗✈️

✨ What advice would you give someone thinking about becoming a carer?
“Go for it, you have nothing to lose. If you’re loving and caring, you would love it.” 💞

A personal thank you from all of us:
Kate, thank you for your kindness, your consistency and the way you make every visit count. Our customers feel safer, happier and more independent because of you—and our team feels stronger with you in it. We’re so grateful for everything you do. 🙏💜

🌟 Meet the Team: Leah 🌟

Today, we’re delighted to introduce you to Leah, one of our caring and dedicated team members at Helping Hands 💜

Leah became a carer because she loves making a positive difference to people’s lives. For her, knowing that she has helped someone feel special, listened to and valued is what makes her feel proud of the work she does. She believes that caring is about kindness, treating every person as an individual and making sure their needs are met 💕🤝

Leah says she loves working at Helping Hands because there is always someone available to answer questions and offer support in a friendly, non-judgemental way. She values the strong sense of teamwork, the passion for meeting customers’ needs and the lovely people she works alongside 😊

Outside of work, Leah enjoys spending time with her family, going on days out and simply enjoying being together. She also loves running and takes part in fundraising for The Lullaby Trust and other charities close to her heart 🏃‍♀️💙

Her advice to anyone thinking about becoming a carer is simple: “Do it!” Making someone smile, laugh or feel supported is incredibly rewarding, and Leah is proud to be a carer every day 🌈

A personalised thank you to Leah for the kindness, compassion and positivity she brings to her role. Your dedication makes a real difference to the people you support, and we are so grateful to have you as part of the Helping Hands team 💜👏

🌟 Meet the Team: Jaymie! 🌟

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on our wonderful carer, Jaymie. 💙

💬 What do you love about being a carer?
“I love being able to make a genuine difference to someone’s day. It’s really rewarding getting to know my clients, building a relationship with them and being someone they can rely on. I especially love hearing their stories and getting to know them as a person, not just as someone I’m there to help.” 🧡👵👴

💬 What do you like about working for Helping Hands?
“I really like how supportive everyone is. Whenever I’m in the office, we always have a laugh and it feels like such a welcoming environment. They’re really supportive of me in my professional development and I know that if I ever need extra support or advice, I can always talk to them. I also really enjoy being part of a team where everyone genuinely wants to help each other to improve clients’ care.” 🏡💼

💬 What do you like to do in your spare time?
“In my spare time I love spending time with my friends. I also enjoy going to the gym, listening to music and seeing live shows. I tried to start gardening (and failed!) and recently started learning British Sign Language.” 🎶🎭🏋️‍♀️🌱🤟

💬 What advice would you give someone thinking about becoming a carer?
“I’d say go for it! You need to be patient, compassionate and willing to learn, but it’s such a rewarding job. You get to meet so many different people and hear so many amazing experiences. My biggest piece of advice would be to treat every person as an individual and always remember that the little things you do make a really big difference to someone’s day.” 💫

A huge thank you, Jaymie, for the incredible care, kindness and dedication you bring to our clients every single day. You truly make a difference. 🙏💙

Communication is about more than just words. For someone living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, finding the right words can sometimes be difficult. Small changes in how we communicate can make a big difference.
✨ Speak slowly and use short sentences
✨ Give them time to respond
✨ Maintain eye contact and use their name
✨ Stay calm and patient
✨ Avoid correcting or arguing
✨ Use gestures and visual cues when helpful
✨ Focus on feelings, not just facts
Most importantly, every conversation is an opportunity to help someone feel heard, respected and understood. 💜
