A very German day at the garage yesterday! Its been super busy and I really need to keep up with some social media!

Mercedes CLA for diagnostic work, egr and dpf faults, no reading from the egr differential pressure sensor, turns out someone had damaged the harness connector previously leaving a Bluetooth connection 🀣 once secured live data confirmed everything reading as it should, road test and dpf regeneration followed by a major service!

BMW 335d for diagnostic work also, intermittent loss of power and headlight leveling fault. Intermittent ones are sometimes a struggle to pinpoint but fortunately with this one a fault had been stored for the swirl flap motor or arm. Motor actuation failed and once removed confirmed the flaps were moving free. Inside these motors are plastic gears, after many miles and heat cycles they become brittle and wear the teeth down or snap them off. Replacement motor ordered and a swollen/cracked ride height sensor was required also.

Audi S3 in for a minor service, including genuine parts. Digital service schedule updated and warnings reset on dash. Customer was also advised of intervals for DSG gearbox oil and filter change, along with the importance of Haldex Servicing aswell.

Diagnostics/Maintenance/Servicing/Repairs get in touch, spaces fill up quick! Book in now before the summer holiday when the kids want to be taxi'd around everywhere 🀣

DPF problem or is it??

Customer contacted as the dreaded Engine Management Lamp(EML) had illuminated on the dash of there Ford Cmax.

Customer had previously had a DPF regen carried out elsewhere which hadn't solved the problem, causing the EML to reappear after a couple of ignition cycles.

Fault scan showed two concerning faults for the dpf, soot accumulation and pressure sensor fault. Onto the live data, the pressure sensor showed no movement from ignition on, idle or 2500rpm. Sensor voltage reading 4.92v steady, a reading above 4.8v indicates to the ecu a fault in the sensor or its wiring (triggering the fault code).

After checking the wiring it had a good solid 5v reference, 4.99v signal and a good ground to the sensor whilst unplugged, indicating that the harness was intact. Meaning that the sensor is most likely shorted internally to the 5v reference. Quick check on the pressure pipe to check for blockages to confirm there was no hidden cause, which was all clear.

A replacement sensor was ordered and fitted, once reconnected the ECU was now seeing a 0.66v signal from the sensor which allowed the fault status to change from permanent to historic.

Given this fault had been present on the car for nearly 5months, when reading the actual live data from the car showed an idle pressure of 50mbar, this should generally be around 5-15mbar, indicating a blockage in the DPF, with soot loading at 182%

Forced regeneration procedure completed brought this down to 4mbar and a soot loading value of 3%. DPF happy, ECU happy and customer even happier that the issue had finally been resolved!

The only thing I couldnt resolve on the day was the damaged harness connector caused by previous attempts to fix elsewhere.

Saving some Qashqai..

Customer contacted me after being advised his head gasket had failed on his car, having been quoted Β£11,500 for replacement!

I had managed to source a reconditioned engine and turbo for the car, but before ordering anything, id suggested to the customer that id like to do my own tests to confirm the other garages findings we factual.

Out came the chemical block tester, this detects and CO gasses from the combustion chamber that are entering the coolant system, science stuff but a proven way to evidence a failed head gasket. Test passed with no colour change in the test fluid, upon further inspection of the coolant system, I had found a failed clamp on a radiator hose that was leaking under pressure, and the thermostat housing was cracked causing a leak. No signs of head gasket failure present on the car at all!

Regardless of a reconditioned engine or not, the thermostat and clamp required replacement, nothing to loose by fitting to the current engine and rechecking. So, one fresh thermostat and replacement hose clamp fitted, coolant system vacuum bleed and ran upto temperature.

All good, with again, no signs of head gasket failure, re tested with chemical block tester and passed for a second time. Road tested fine coolant wise but there was still a problem looming in the background....

Timing chain rattle!

The customer rebooked for the following week, allowing some light use on the car to confirm repair on the coolant system and ensure it wasnt overheating anymore.

Timing cover removed and wow was this one stretched, there should be no slack in a timing chain, this one had over 10mm movement in the tensioning chain guide, with the tensioner fully extended! (Video in comments)

New chains fitted, guides, tensioner, sprockets and VVT pulleys, along with an oil and filter change, had this little 1.2turbo sounding sweet!

Managed to save this customer in the region of Β£10,000! All by testing, not guessing!
