Dirty Flaps!!

Lovely BMW 335d xDrive in this week for a replacement intake manifold. The car had previously developed a fault with the swirl flap motor which once replaced was running great for a couple of months, unfortunately this led to the swirl flap lever becoming faulty due to the carbon buildup on the swirl flaps and manifold.

Once the manifold was removed it was clear to see the extend of the carbon buildup on this performance diesel. Struggling to breath this would certainly have had a negative impact on the performance of this engine. With a new manifold being fitted, the flap assembly was nice and free and no carbon buildup was present, the surrounding parts however were still choked!

Egr union and shut off valve joining piece cleaned up nicely, then it was out with the walnut blasted to clean up the intake valves. Crushed walnut fired out at 120psi pressure will certainly help clean the buildup, however, they are not miracle workers, so a quick scrape around the ports first to remove the heavy buildup was required before the shells can do there thing.

Night and day difference on this N57 performance diesel engine, allowing it to inhale as much air as possible to deliver the power it should.

Once put back together the car was road tested and logged an additional 21g/s of airflow through the maf sensor, equates to approx 25bhp that had been lost over the years to carbon buildup.

No pressure..

Stunning mk8 Golf R was recovered in recently, never a good sign seeing a high performance car on the back of a recover truck.

This one was in limp mode and not sounding very happy at all, scanning the vehicle showed low fuel pressure fault P0087 and fuel delivery fault p0148. Data analysis showed that high pressure fuel was only producing 10bar at the fuel rail, on these engines, they require around 100bar at idle, so 10% of the request is nowhere near enough.

Checks on the low pressure supply to the high pressure fuel pump were ok and the in tank fuel pump controller was feeding as requested. I then went on to check the high pressure fuel system, once removed for inspection, initally the pump appeared in good working order, good news! The pump itself is operated from the camshaft via a roller cam follower, this unfortunately was where the bad news presented itself.

The cam follower had failed and therefor was not able to push the high pressure pumps plunger in to create the high pressure fuel this engine needs. The failed follower had caused excessive damage to the vacuum pump aswell meaning the vacuum pump was also no longer fit for purpose. Unfortunately this poorly Golf R was in need of a cam follower and vacuum pump.

Genuine parts sourced with manufacturer revisions to the cam follower, new bolts, gaskets and seals. Once fitted this stunning Golf R was now running and sounding like the flagship powerhouse it should be. Quick data log on the road to confirm actual high pressure was meeting the request from the ecu and all was as it should be once again!

Honda CRV with multiple warnings on the dash, like a Christmas tree 🎄 after some investigation it was found to be a failed turbocharger due to lack of lubrication. Oil feed pipe gauze blocked meaning the turbo wasnt able to be lubricated and failed. Replacement fitted and calibrated, customer saved over £2,000 from dealership quote!

Stunning Audi RS7 to investigate a noise from the rear whilst driving, also resealed the exhaust for a minor leak at a joining fl**ge.

Mercedes C220 from another garage with no rear brakes, initially had a failed brake pipe, garage had replaced both rear pipes and bled them but couldnt get a good brake pedal. I was contacted to rectify this using diagnostic software to bleed the brakes, even this took a while to get a pedal I was happy with and pass the calibration tests for the ABS intake and separation valves. Once completed the brake pedal was back to being firm and ABS function restored.

Fiat 500 Abarth with drivers window stopped working half way down, a fairly common fault on these cars, the wiring harness inside at the door hinge protective rubber becomes damaged and breaks. 6 broken wires and 5 other damaged wires, a total of 11 wires repaired and avoided a costly £600-odd door wiring harness.

Range rover Evoque to find the cause of a noise whilst driving along with a haldex and rear diff oil change. Not a brand I normally look at but as many of you know, im always happy to Help. Unfortunately I was the bearer of bad news with this one as the noise was found to be coming from the output bearing of the transfer box, it simply wasnt doing what a bearing should anymore causing excess movement.

Lovely 2.0TDI VW Caddy van in today for a timing belt and water pump replacement.

Prevention is always better than cure! The belt tensioner on this caddy had became weak and wasnt holding the correct tension on the belt.

Official intervals for VW timing belts, in my opinion and experience, are far too long, I recommend these be changed every 5-6years or 60-80k miles. This applies to 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 1.5 petrol 1.6, 1.9 2.0 diesel.

Genuine parts are always recommended on VW Group vehicles, its just not worth fitting a lesser quality kit. Auxillery belt replacement is also included with every timing belt kit.
