Following complications during surgery that left her paralysed on her left side and reliant on a wheelchair, Kate's family home could no longer accommodate her accessibility needs.

After spending 12 months in hospital, she was discharged to a rehabilitation facility rather than being able to return to her partner and young son.

With permanent home adaptations still unresolved, an interim solution was needed to make her return possible.

Our External Compact WashPod™ was selected to provide accessible washing and toileting facilities, allowing Kate to return home in time to spend Christmas with her family for the first time in nearly two years.
The installation was completed in just one day.

Kate's experience highlights an important consideration in rehabilitation and discharge planning: a person's ability to return home is not determined by their medical needs alone, but also by whether their living environment can safely accommodate them.

🏠 The future of accessible housing is about much more than individual adaptations.

Across the UK, an ageing population, rising levels of disability and a shortage of accessible homes are increasing the need for housing that can respond more effectively when people’s circumstances change.

Our latest blog looks at the bigger picture, from designing homes that can adapt over time to the growing role of modular construction and portable adaptations. It also explores why accessibility should be considered from the outset, rather than only when an urgent need arises.

What happens when someone is medically ready to return home, but their bathroom isn’t accessible?

For Seth, this was more than an accessibility problem. After spending two years in hospital following a life-changing spinal injury, being able to shower properly was an important part of feeling independent again.

An Internal Micro WashPod™ was installed just days before Seth returned home, providing an accessible bathing solution while his family began planning permanent adaptations through a Disabled Facilities Grant.

His mum Julie described the difference simply:
“It was a real morale booster for him... He felt fresh and it set him up for the day. It made him feel human again.”

This is why interim adaptations can be so important.

A permanent solution may take time. The person’s need for dignity, independence and a safe return home does not.

Let’s talk lead times.
When someone is ready to come home, every extra day waiting can matter.

If they have lost mobility, are recovering from illness or can no longer use their bathroom safely, a delay can have a real impact on daily life.

It can mean spending longer in hospital.

It can mean relying more heavily on family or carers.

It can mean losing some independence while everyone waits for the right support to be put in place.

Sometimes, the hardest part is simply being stuck in between. Well enough to go home, but without the right facilities at home to make that possible.

That is why quick turnaround matters.

It is not about rushing the process. It is about reducing the amount of time someone has to live without the support they need.

The right solution still has to be safe, suitable and properly planned. But where that can be done quickly, it can make a real difference to someone’s comfort, confidence and independence.

This is also why we have built speed into the way WashPod™ works. Depending on the model, installation can take from as little as half a day to around 4–5 days, with many models installed within 1–3 days.

What if a home adaptation could support more than one person over its lifetime?

For years, major adaptations have often been treated as one-off investments. They are installed for one individual, in one property, for one set of needs.

But circumstances change. People move, recover, their needs develop, or an adaptation is simply no longer required.

That raises an important question for Local Authorities and Housing Associations: could more adaptations be designed with reuse in mind from the outset?

A reusable approach can help public funding go further, reduce unnecessary waste and create more flexibility for future service users. It also supports a more circular way of thinking about adaptations, where value is measured across the full lifespan of the solution rather than just the initial installation.

Accident recovery can be painful. Accessing basic hygiene shouldn't be.

It's something we often take for granted until it suddenly isn't possible.

After losing part of his leg in a road accident, Steve returned home without suitable washing facilities. For three months, he couldn't shower and had to wash at the sink. It wasn't just frustrating, it also made caring for his wound more difficult.

When his Internal Compact WashPod™ was installed, everything changed.

"I was able to have a shower for the first time in three months... I don't have to rely on my girlfriend for help. What's more, the doctors are happy with me."

It’s always lovely to be able to share a good news story, particularly on a Friday, and one that gives such hope and inspiration to us all.
Saffron Cresswell was a young, talented international event rider who had a devastating fall at a horse trials a couple of years ago. She relied on one of our WashPod™ temporary disabled wetrooms to get home from hospital after the fall left her paralysed from the waist down.
But she’s in the news again for her remarkable transition from ‘Saddle to Paddle’ as she looks forward to competing at a top level again but this time for GB in canoeing.
“The WashPod™ allowed me to come home to my family and horses where I could continue my rehabilitation work and decide on what my future now held”.
“There were many things to think about, that I would never have considered before my accident. It’s all about getting to a point where you can live independently and having the WashPod™ certainly gave me a head start in feeling I could do things for myself.”
Saffron was positive about the future: “Life does not end with spinal cord injury” she said. “It is the beginning of a new life - a new normal life.”
But what a life!
